Title: Interactive Photo Album Presentation
Course: 103-1 Multimedia
Date Created: February 26, 2003
Source: Individual TATC Project
Media: Adobe GoLive and html for Web Authoring; Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for editing photographs; Microsoft PowerPoint for Photo Album presentation; Swish for text animation; Internet
Description: Our assignment was to create a multimedia photo album of our life. It could combine family, work, a collection of various pictures or just a hobby. The photo album was to be an interactive Internet album posted on a web site that we created. The web site was to have an animated splash page to introduce the site, and the photo album was to be integrated into the site. A minimum of two pages were required for the web site. The photo album was to include 5-10 pictures that were selected from bitmapped and vector graphics. The pictures could be edited and the album created in presentation software. In addition, a video was to be embedded or linked with a thumbnail into the web site. A brief description of the photos along with a summary of bitmapped and vector graphics and a credits section were other elements to include. This project was indeed a multimedia assignment integrating animation, graphics, photo slide show, sound, and video through a web site. To begin the project, I used Swish to create the animated text on my splash page and also incorporated a sound file for the theme. The web site was designed and created in Adobe GoLive. I selected pictures from existing photographs, and then scanned the images and edited the photos in Photoshop. Elements and principles of design were considered and implemented in the photo album layout and within the web site. The photos were presented as an album through a PowerPoint show that was embedded into my web page. I selected a movie trailer for my video element and embedded it in my web page along with a thumbnail graphic.
Rationale: I selected this artifact because I was proud of my finished product and the various areas of multimedia that it demonstrates. I feel it shows the progress I have made to this point in TATC in using various software to create multimedia products. The animated text on my splash page and incorporated sound file were a definite plus for the theme of this multimedia photo album. The video that was selected gave a little insight into my interests, although it was not a video I created. Selecting, scanning, and editing the photos taught me a lot about the differences in bitmapped and vector graphics images and how these need to be handled for a presentation. File size was an issue, so photos were optimized for web presentation. I tried to incorporate the elements and principles of design within my photo album and the web site itself, and I feel these were evident in the overall feeling of the site and album. This assignment was a great example of multimedia as it showcased so many of the elements of multimedia--sound, video, web authoring, graphics, and photo editing. The photo album itself was presented in multimedia format.
Implications for future: The assignment helped me to understand how the various elements of multimedia work together in multimedia presentations and projects. The feedback and communication with classmates and instructors in analyzing presentations provided opportunities for growth in my outlook on what multimedia entails. I will continue to learn more about using multimedia in projects for my own use and in the classroom. I hope to expand my photo album and share it online with other family members.
Reviewer's Comments: Great work on the photo album. Beautiful children. The white type is a great contrast to the blue- easy to read. All of your links work. Great job. OK, now I have to rewatch the Matrix so I can see the sequel. Looks like a great movie.

Title: Lord of the Rings Movie Integration
Course: Multimedia 103-1
Date Created: March 11, 2003
Source: Individual TATC Project
Media: Internet, Scanner, Photoshop 7.0, Adobe GoLive 6.0, Swish 2.01, Microsoft Sound Recorder, atomixmp3 (trial download)
Description: We were instructed to build a multimedia product that would include audio and video and then deliver it as a web page. The tone for the web page was to be persuasive--to promote interest in the movie or show that had been selected. The movie integration project was actually a culmination of several prior assignments. There were many requirements and steps involved before the final project would be complete. The audio file was selected for a previous discussion with our movie integration project in mind. I searched the Internet for audio files to fit the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. I selected a clip that featured a reading from the book and a second clip of music from the movie theme. Both were in mp3 format, so I had to convert to wav files. I then used Sound Recorder to edit the clips further for length. I combined the two wav files using atomixmp3 trial downloaded software (We had to choose from several sound editing programs, use them for this assignment and then review the software for a separate discussion assignment.) After the files were blended through editing, I had to use another software program to change back to mp3 for compression purposes since the trial download did not have this option. I used Internet searches and found a very wide variety of related sites on the books and films. I used these resources to find images and a video clip to include in my web page. A credits and resources page was included in my web site with links to my source sites. I scanned an image from the DVD cover of my personal copy of the movie. All the images were edited and sized in Adobe Photoshop for use in the project. To create the splash page for my web site, I used Swish 2.01 to animate the text and then blend it with the audio file. In addition, I inserted an image of the ring and used animation techniques to fade the ring into the animation. Since the splash page would take the visitor to the main page which took a little time to load, I also animated text to ask the visitors to be patient. The main web page featured information on the book and movies to give information and to persuade visitors to see the movies. I used Swish again to animate text with the ring image and then embedded the swf files to serve as navigational links. The web site included a storyboard page where we were required to give a rundown on the storyboard for our multimedia creation. There was also a timeline page to give a brief picture of our schedule, and a credits page where we would give additional information and list the sources we had used. Each of these pages used the same navigational buttons created for my home page. Colors were selected to coordinate with the ring grahic. The color scheme for the entire site was created for drama and to highlight the images.
Rationale: The movie integration project was truly an example of multimedia in action! It actually encompasses several prior discussions and assignments in the finished project. I was very proud of my final project, although at times I was sure I would never complete it! I struggled with many of the portions of this project because I was just beginning to learn about sound editing and animation. Whenever I was ready to throw in the towel, one of my classmates or instructor would be there with an answer. I also asked my teenage son for assistance, and he helped save the day. Many of the pieces of this project were created through experimentation and trial and error, but in the process I learned many new things. Sometimes I learned what to do, and other times I learned what not to do! Because we selected our topic, I was motivated by my own interest in the books and movies. That made searching and finding sources fun. Some of the sources had been found through an earlier assignment when I had evaluated web sites. Two intense weeks were spent on this assignment because of the related discussions, but in the meantime we had other discussions to keep up with. I persevered through sickness, moments of sheer panic over all the new concepts and software, and Spring Break. I was pretty bummed about TATC during Spring Break, but thank goodness it came during this assignment. I don't believe I would ever have been able to finish it otherwise! I value the knowledge I gained through working on this complex assignment, and I am proud of the final product even though there are still changes I would make!
Implications for future: The project, along with the first artifact, really made me understand the true nature of multimedia and all it involves. I have already used the sound editing techniques in later projects as well as animation for web pages. Creating a persuasive multimedia project of this type is very similar to real world multimedia projects aimed at "selling" a particular audience on some type of product. I have a newfound respect for the work that is involved, even if I don't always like the sales pitch. Being able to create persuasive multimedia projects of this type could be beneficial in many instances. The knowledge I gained could also be used to create multimedia lessons featuring audio and visual effects to stimulate students' interest in the topic at hand. If I ever teach multimedia classes, the skills I cultivated on this project would be exactly what I need to teach the students to do similar projects. I know students would love a project of this type to stretch their creativity!
Reviewer's Comments: Good job! I think using the black background with gold text and the gold rings for your buttons really made everything coordinate and stand out. Your splash was very good. I liked the way you had the text and ring fade out and the voice read the text. Your links worked. Overall very visually attractive and I can't wait to see the second show.
