Standard I

Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

My proficiency in using technology terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies has been and, in my opinion, will continue to be a work in progress. Terms and concepts related to technology are evolving on a daily basis, and sometimes it is a struggle to keep up! Data input strategies continue to change with new means and methods of input that are developing. However, my goal is to continue to learn more about existing and future technology in order to make "informed" decisions on using the technology personally and in my classroom. As technology continues to blaze paths in new areas, it is imperative that we stay informed in order to make ethical choices as to its use!

Title: Digital Thyme Web Site/Impact Report

Course: Foundations 100

Date Created: August 13, 2002

Source: Group Project for TATC; group members were Candy Key, Carol Luttmer, Beverly Sweeney, and myself.

Media: Microsoft Word rich text file (.rtf) document for information reporting. The web site was created by group member Candy Key. Thanks again Candy for your hard work!

Description: Groups were assigned by our instructor for the Foundations course, Rachel Newman. Group members were to research the impact on society of a particular TA course area--our group covered Digital Graphics/Animation. We used sites from our course readings and sites we located through our own searches. We communicated through class email and class chat features (sometimes frantically) to come up with a plan for group member responsibilities and an outline of what we needed to cover. (We even resorted to cell phones and land lines!) Members of the group had to write a report for their own specific aspects of the impact report, and my assigned area was "Entertainment and Art". Group members had to provide site information for sites they used in their research. One group member was responsible for taking the information and creating a web site. Candy Key was the "chosen one" and created a very nicely themed web site to display our information. One additional requirement of the assignment was to read our classmates' reports and post relative comments to the discussion area. Through reading and discussing other impact reports, I gained a greater insight into all the TA course technologies.

Rationale: It may seem odd that I selected an artifact from so early in my journey through TATC, but this standard, in my opinion, forms a foundation for many others. Our work in the Foundations course for this artifact provided a firm foundation for my continued progress on this standard from this project forward. The group project was my first experience in working as a "group" in an online setting with no face-to-face communication. Because we were an online group, I had to dive in and use the features provided with the First Class client--threaded email discussions, private chat features, and the phone booth. This assignment provided my first real experience in using these electronic tools from the online classroom. It was really a very difficult adjustment for me, but through teamwork and a spirit of collaboration, we were able to pull it off, and I was on the right path to expand my horizons in this area!

Implications for future: I have already used many of the concepts that I was introduced to through this assignment along the journey through TATC. Through discussion assignments along the way, I have learned to "get informed" and make "informed choices" from electronic information on issues related to technology use, software and hardware considerations, and budgets. I will continue to learn new terms related to electronic information as they are introduced. I will continue to make ethical decisions as to the use of the electronic information I access, and I continue to input data as I keyboard this very sentence. Electronic information and all the choices it entails are firmly planted in my life today and in my future. Group research projects using Internet research are common in classrooms everywhere, and I will use what I have learned with my students. The reviewer's comment indicates ways another teacher planned to use the electronic information with her classes.

Reviewer's Comments: Cute 'thyme'. I checked out several of the sites and they were very informative. I am bookmarking your site so that I can go back to school tomorrow and bookmark them on my computer there to use for some of my classes.
