A Glimpse of Kim Lowrance

Standards VII:  Desktop Publishing

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Most people who are blessed with the ability to work creatively on a computer know how vital desktop publishing skills are.  I am asked to do more in the area of desktop publishing than any other!  Whether it's a program for graduation, a brochure for the church, or invitations to a baby shower, it seems that my desktop publishing skills are constantly being employed!  Now that I have actually learned some of the basics of design (as opposed to just going with what "looks" right!), I am also much more aware of the things I use in my daily life in the classroom such as handouts, rubrics, and tests, as well.  I can't grade my students on skills that I'm not using on things I give them!  I value what I have learned in this standard as much as any other if not more because I anticipate continuing to use my desktop publishing skills both in and out of the classroom.

Artifact #4

Descriptors:  Newsletter, masthead, templates, typography

Title:  Creating a Newsletter

Course:  104 Desktop Publishing

Date Created:  January 18, 2003

Source: Newsletter created in Microsoft Publisher, scanned as a .jpeg, and inserted in web page.  Also saved as a .pdf file for printing.

Media: Web page

Description:
The project called for the creation of a template, then a newsletter that incorporates good page design principles including columns, pull quotes, graphics, typefaces, white space, proximity, repetition, and alignment.

Rationale:
The assignment called for the inclusion of good design principles, plus provided for a built in review of the terminology we studied.  (The terms became the actual content for the newsletter.)  I chose to use Microsoft Publisher, which I had never used before, because I wanted an opportunity to learn it.  I was very pleased with my product even though it is a rather cumbersome program to use, and that is why I decided to use it as an artifact.

Implications for future
I plan to use the terminology and principles I learned both in my classroom and in my own desktop publishing projects in the future.  The specific techniques I learned in developing the newsletter in Publisher will be utilized immediately in the creation of a newsletter for my Sunday School class members.

Reviewer's Comments
Thanks for resending the newsletter in pdf format - A link from your web page would have been easy also. Good job on layout -

Descriptors:  Unit / lesson plan, objective, tools, terms, procedures, sample

Title:  Unit / Lesson Plans

Course:  104 Desktop Publishing

Date Created:  January 30, 2003

Source:  Adobe Photoshop 7.0, Microsoft Front Page 2000

Media:  Web Page

Description:
Create a desktop publishing unit lesson plan that includes:
*Objective of the unit or lesson
*Teacher tools and supplies list
*Concepts and TEKS applications
*Sample product of lesson
*Terms utilized in lesson
*Procedures used in instruction
*Assessment tool
*Sources used
*Software requirements
*Hardware requirements
*Classroom instruction time for the unit
*Classroom lab time for student work
*Auxiliary applications for modifications, G/T students, etc.

Rationale
I chose this as an artifact because it is an assignment I immediately put to use in the classroom as soon as I put the finishing touches on it for TATC!  It was an assignment that I felt sure my students would enjoy and benefit from, and they did.  In fact, we displayed them for the faculty to look at and chose on that they liked.  Then my students created personalized cards for the teachers and administrators (me included!)

Implications for future
I will continue to use this assignment in the future because it utilizes the students graphics editing skills, their creativity, and their desktop publishing skills.

Reviewer's Comments:
Great job on your unit lesson. I really like the clear language and wording that you used. Your terms, procedures, grading rubric, etc. were all plainly laid out where the expectations were clear and the project was very attainable for the students while teaching them loads of information. I really enjoyed your project!
