A Glimpse of Kim Lowrance

Standards XVideo Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

The standard of video technology addresses an area of real growth for the technology application teacher.  Producing videos is no longer reserved for the advanced classes in schools; from elementary students who are now applying their learning in the primary classroom to science projects in middle school curriculum, video is now an integral part of the education process.  Teachers are finding that students will enthusiastically apply themselves to a video production that captures their learning as opposed to compiling a less than creative basic report.  Because of this trend toward video in the classroom, I feel that this standard is one of the most vital aspects of the TATC experience.

This standard has also afforded me the most room for growth.  I had some experience with video production before TATC, but after this deeper study and application, I am much more confident to include it in my curriculum.  I'm thankful the video tech course was offered later in the game plan of TATC because it really is a culmination of all of the other elements we've learned.

Artifact #6

Descriptors:  Video, Mood, Audio, Storyboard, Script, Credits, Group

Title:  Mood Piece

Course:  105 Video Technology

Date Created:  March 26, 2003

Source:  Adobe Go Live 6.0, MGI VideoWave 4.0

Media:  Web Page

Description:
1.  Met on-line with assigned group to establish mood we wanted
2.  Searched for on-line video clips to represent mood
3.  Secured video clips edited by group members
4.  Edited my video clip
5.  Secured audio file from group member
6.  Secured for and secured on-line graphics for opening and closing frames
7.  Assembled, edited, and produced  video
8.  Submitted first production of video for group's review
9.  Included text, graphics, sources / credits, audio, video clips, and transitions
10.  Submitted final video to group for approval and web page presentation

Rationale:
I chose to include this project as an artifact because it took so much effort to get it done!  Working as an on-line team presents numerous challenges, not to mention just completing the technical aspects of producing the video itself.  Overall, we were each pleased with the final outcome of our project.

Implications for future:
I learned so much from this cooperative learning assignment that I plan to incorporate it into my final six weeks lesson plans with my current multimedia class.  They have worked collaboratively this year on many projects with deadlines, but not in the realm of video production.  I will assign them each separate roles including producer, text editor, videographer, video editor, sound editor, graphics editor, and storyboard editor.  Then they will know the true meaning of working together as a team.

Rationale:
I chose to include this as an artifact because it was a highlight of the TATC experience for me.  This project required the application of much of what I've learned through the program:  the principles of design, graphics editing, web authoring, audio editing, and video production.  While I would have been more pleased with being able to publish the higher quality version, I am happy to be able to keep that one for my family as a keepsake!

Implications for future:
I can't wait to incorporate this assignment into my multimedia curriculum next year!  Music is a top priority for most young people, and I'm convinced that my students will love this challenging assignment!  I intend to schedule it next year prior to the date  when their senior projects are due in their English IV course so they will be able to show off their finished product in multiple areas.

Reviewer's Comments:
I'm so glad you enjoyed and probably by now have taught it in your class. I bet your students really enjoyed it. I would love to see the original of your movie so I could see it clearer. It was very touching. I bet your daughter and husband will always treasure this video. GREAT JOB and GREAT IDEA!!!
