Standards I:  Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

It's important for me as a technology teacher to provide my students with a variety of software experiences.  Free trials are a great way to try out different applications without incurring costs for our school districts.  In dealing with ethical issues of piracy and copyright issues, we cannot overemphasize how careful we have to be!  I also believe it's important for us to share a common vocabulary in dealing with technology terms, so I always include vocabulary lessons in my teaching units.  Finally, after seeing me suffer from tendonitis from my computer usage, my students without a doubt know the importance of good posture and  wrist supports for data entry practices!

Artifact #12

Descriptors:  Software, review, recommendation

Title:  Web Software Tips and Techniques

Course:  102 Web Authoring

Date Created:  September 22, 2002

Source:  On-line resources and personal experience with software

Media:  Universally acceptable .pdf document

Description:
*Made a recommendation on software purchase
*Found a review of the software choices
*Included supporting data
*Prepared as spreadsheet

Rationale:
I chose this assignment to include as an artifact because it represents a real life activity for me.  This year I was asked to present a recommendation on animation software, and I was able to use this format for my presentation.  In completing the research for my information, I had to compare many facets of the software including price, features, future available upgrades, and compatibility.

Implications for future:
I have used a similar approach as this for my multimedia students to research audio mixing software. I was amazed at the variety of software choices they found!  We were able to try many of them out on a trial basis before settling on one that we actually purchased.   I also provide my students with a variety of software choices for our main subjects of web authoring, graphics editing, sound editing, animation, and video tech.

Reviewer's Comments:
You recommend Front Page for the beginning and GoLive for the more advanced. That is good to hear because you have taught web page and this is my first year to teach web. I am doing my class that way....Front Page at the beginning and GoLive later. The good part is...I am teaching them some Photoshop too and they are beginning to understand how Adobe works.
