Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection: Before I started the Digital Graphics/ Animation course, I had a poor understanding about what I could do with Graphics and Animation.   I used Adobe Photoshop for my Digital Graphics course.  I took a workshop at Region XV and started using it.  After a slow start, I really got into Adobe Photoshop and I thoroughly enjoy learning in it.  The elements and principles of design that I learned in this course helped me look at graphics in a whole new perspective.  The graphic collage that we did was fun and I taught myself a lot as to what I can do with a graphic.  I have found that if I don't keep on going back and using it that I forget how to do some things.  For the Animation software, I used Adobe Livemotion.  I really enjoyed learning it also.  Region XV had a great workshop that I attended and it helped tremendously. I learned how to incorporate it into the lesson that I came up with where I made birds fly across my backyard.   I look forward to the future when I can teach my students about Digital Graphics and Animation.  I only hope I can teach it so that my students can grasp the fun and enthusiasm out of it like I have.  I find myself looking at graphics that I had put on our school's web page and going back and making them look better using my newfound knowledge.  My learning about Digital Graphics and Animation will continue as I teach my students and work with our annual staff in the present and on into the future.

Title: Analysis of Effective use of the Elements and Principles of Design - Art Critique

Course: 100 Foundations

Date Created: 08/21/2002

Source: Individual Project with graphics and animation taken from sources sited in project.

Media: Web Page

Description: The goal of this project was to seek out one example  for each TA subject to analyze for its effective use of the elements and principles of design.

Rationale:  Since I am the Webmaster of our school's web-site, I had already done graphics and pages for most of the  TA subjects.  For the TA subjects that I had not done, I searched the Internet and my local teachers for what they had done.  I was to evaluate each TA representation using the following format: 1)Description: through which you try to find out when, where and by whom the work was done. 2)Analysis: through which you discover unique features of a work of art. 3)Interpretation: through which you try to determine how the artist was influenced by the world in which he or she lived and worked. 4)Judgement: through which you make a decision about the work's importance, using industrial-age definitions of terms and concepts.

Implications for future: This type of critique gives me insight as to how to have my students use this to learn about Technology Applications.

Reviewer's Comments: James, the drawing by the first grader is incredible.  It has such bright, vivid colors but there's still a strong feeling of balance to it.  What a talented child!

Title: Digital Graphics/Animation Lesson - Backyards and Birdhouses

Course: Digital Graphics/Animation 101

Date Created: 11/06/02

Source: Individual Project

Media: Web Pages

Description:  This was a Digital Graphics/Animation project lesson on how to take a digital photograph, using digital graphic software and digital animation software, with step by step instructions as how to insert other graphics and even animations into the digital photograph.  This lesson also incorporates: Teaching Notes, Vocabulary lesson, Step-by-Step Instructions, Sample of Finished Product, and a Credits page.

Rationale:  This Digital Graphics/Animation Lesson using Backyards and Birdhouses was a thought that I put into action.  I was sitting at my dining room table thinking about what topic I would build a lesson around, and I was looking out into my backyard.  I love to watch the birds as I feed them in the backyard.  So, I thought I would take a digital photograph and start from there.  I really enjoyed doing this lesson because it was a real world I was seeing on my computer screen.  I learned a lot as to how to incorporate other graphics into my original photograph using Adobe Photoshop 7.0.  Also, I learned how to make the photograph look different using methods found in Photoshop.   I learned how to take Graphics and using Adobe LiveMotion Animation software, make this graphic move on my computer screen.  This lesson can be used as a lesson to teach students how to incorporate all of this software together into one unit lesson on Digital Graphics/Animation.

Implications for future:  I will use this Digital Graphics/Animation Lesson to teach my students in the future.  This unit lesson can be used with different topics as well.  I will leave it up to my students to pick their own topic and make it a reality to them as it was to me when I first started this project.

Reviewer's Comments: Nice job James.  I enjoyed all your pictures and your backgrounds.
