Communicate Information

Communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

Reflection:  It is important to provide information to web browsers as fast as can be provided.  Digital Graphics really need to be optimized so that web browsers accessing the Internet with 56k modems can see the web page as fast as possible.  Schools with T1 lines accessing the Internet at 100 meg speeds have an advantage over most home users when it comes to browsing the Internet.  Cable companies are trying to overcome this speed difference but the price is still pretty high for most home users.

Title: Optimizing Images

Course: Extended Web Authoring 202

Date Created: 11/20/02

Source: Individual Project

Media: Web Page

Description:  In this activity, I took 3 photographs from my digital camera and optimized them to minimize size and maximize appearance.  I showed a side by side comparison of the file before and after compression including the images and statistics.  File properties shown are file type, file size, number of colors, number of pixels and download time for each file as a comparison along with the visual clarity of the image.  I also informed the reader of the software program that I used and briefly how I optimized the files.

Rationale:  This activity showed me the importance of optimizing images for web pages.  Download time can be a big difference to someone looking at your web page by not waiting too long to see the desired page or waiting and deciding to go somewhere else and not wait any longer.  I also found out where to find out this information from the software I used (Adobe Photoshop and Imageready).

Implications for future:  The implications for this project helped me with my school's web site, which I am the Webmaster of.  In the future I will make athletic photographs available on the web in a smaller file size.  I will also use a software package that will take a lot of digital photographs and optimize them all for me at once instead of one at a time.  I will also have a better understanding of what to teach the students to watch out for when transferring photographs onto web pages.

Reviewer's Comments:  Great Job.  I liked your format and the way you presented your information.
