Title: Hot Texas Travel
Course: Web Authoring 102
Date Created: September 2002
Source: Individual Project
Media: Web Page
Description: This was an assignment in
the TATC Web Authoring course, which was to
create a Travel Web site.
Rationale: This Web site was made up
to be a Texas Travel Agency. I used
Microsoft Frontpage Themes in creating my made
up Travel Web site. I chose to include
this as an artifact because Frontpage Extensions
used with Microsoft Frontpage 2002 is not on
every web server. It is important to note
what will work with the web server you are going
to put a web page onto. I spent a lot of
time getting it all to work on my computer.
It worked on my school's web site which has
Frontpage Extensions installed on the web
server. When I installed the web site onto
the First Class Server the themes did not work
the way they were supposed to. I learned
that not all web servers work with Frontpage
2002, especially themes. I had time
limitations on me and I left the web site the
way it was. I learned that Frontpage 2002 is
priority to Frontpage extensions and that when
using their themes the naming breaks the 8
character rule. The web server will
truncate the name when it goes over the limit of
characters, which is what FrontPage does many
times. It still works, just not the way it is
supposed to. To avoid the problem, I need
to avoid Frontpage Themes or find a third party
software to make the file names no more than 8
characters. I learned that Frontpage
Extensions are only used on Microsoft Servers
and First Class itself does not support
Frontpage Extensions. This helped me
achieve a goal of learning more about Web
Servers as to what is supported, what is not,
and how to go about finding out!
Implications for future:
Compatibility
with Web servers is a specific learning goal
that I have set for myself as a result of this
assignment! I will definitely find out
more about the web servers in the future that I
will be working with and find out what they
support and what they do not support! I
will definitely teach my students this as one of
the learning goals to find out about before they
start making web pages.
Reviewer's Comments: It is not the FC
but the fact that it is a web server. The
basis rules of web development apply to a web
server. No spaces in a file name, 8
characters or less, no caps. Some servers
do not let you break any of those rules (Linux)
while others will let you break some of them.
For the surest thing in developing web pages it
is best to design by those rules then it will
work on any web server. Frontpage is
priority to Frontpage extensions. Also
when using their themes the naming breaks the 8
character rule. The web server will
truncate the name when it goes over the limit of
characters which is what FP does many times.
You might consult ElementK to see if one of the
courses their helps in renaming the themes.
If you have a site manager in FP you can rename
all of your theme folders and file names to fit
a shorter name scheme and then it will work
fine.

Title: Teacher Help Web Site
Course: 202 Extended Web Authoring
Date Created: December 2, 2002
Source: Individual Project
Media: Web Site
Description: The idea was to create a
web site designed for a group of users in my
school district in order to help them create a
web site.
Rationale: The Teacher Help Web Site
was designed for helping teachers to go to a web
site and follow step by step instructions to
produce their own basic web site. I had to
create the web site using an external cascaded
style sheet that was linked to each page of the
web site. The CSS was new to me and I had
some difficulty getting the big picture of how
it fit all together. I finally
figured it out with some help from my classmates, was able to put it together, and understand
what I was doing. It is always a plus to
know different ways to put web pages together
and this is the case with CSS.
I am including this artifact because it
involves a deeper understanding of Web
Authoring. Most people know how to make a
web page, but when you start talking about
Cascading Style Sheets, they look at you funny.
Now that I know how CSS works, I will be able to
take advantage of the knowledge gained to
produce better web pages and sites.
Implications for future: As a
teacher, my job is to understand all there is to
know about what I am teaching. Learning
about Cascading Style Sheets and Frames was a
specific learning goal of mine at the start of
the Extended Web Authoring Course. This
Teacher Web Site will serve two purposes for me:
1) an example for my students on how to use CSS
and 2) an example for my teachers on how to make
their own web site.
Reviewer's Comments: Your teacher help
site is very well organized. The color
scheme is easy on the eyes and the screen shots
help to clarify the instructions. The
step-by-step instructions are clear and concise.
You have done a great job of creating a simple
help site for creating a web site.
