Digital Graphics Vocabulary

The term refers to the number of pixels that describe an image and establish its detail.
Pixels per inch, used with image resolution.
Dots per inch, used with monitor resolution.
Ink dots per inch, used with printer or output resolution.
The strength or purity of color in an image.
Continuous-tone images that have been converted into a series of small squares, or picture elements.
Joint Photographic Experts Group. A file format designed to preserve the broad color range and subtle brightness variations of continuous-tone images (such as photographs or images with gradients). Uses millions of colors.
Graphic Interchange Format. A file format effective at compressing solid-color images and images with areas of repetitive color (such as line art, logos, and illustrations with type). Uses a palette of 256 colors.
A cross-platform interface for acquiring images captured by certain scanners, digital cameras, and frame grabbers.
Windows Image Acquisition support. Photoshop works with Windows and your digital camera or scanner software to import images directly into Photoshop. Only available if you are using WindowsME or Windows XP.
