Transitions

When you finish editing your video, the cuts between clips should be smooth and invisible. The first step in creating smooth cuts in your video is to trim the clips so that, as much as possible, the end of one clip flows into the beginning of the next.
Do this by using one or more of the following techniques for each edit:
§       Cut during an action.
§       Use the position on screen to lead the eye. For example, if you end a clip with the character on the right, open the next clip with the character on the same side.
§       Use an idea to carry your audience from one clip to the next.
§       Use similar forms. For example, end one clip and open the next with a similarly shaped object.

Effects
Effects create subtle, yet powerful images in your video and smooth the transition from one video clip to the next. Effects also add interest and help communicate the message of your video.
Transition effects are often used to show a time lapse or a change in scene. There are three main types of transition effects:
§       Dissolve effects
§       Wipe effects
§       Digital video effects
Dissolve effects
Dissolves fade the current image as a new image becomes visible in its place. They are the most subtle transition effects and can be used throughout your video without becoming a distraction. They can also help conceal problems with your video, for example, when transitions between shots are shaky or when two very similar clips are edited together. Because dissolve effects are so subtle, they can be very short. Traditionally, videos begin and end with dissolve effects.
Wipe effects
Wipes move a margin or border across the screen, exposing the new image. Wipes are useful for defining the transitions between different sections of your video. They are more noticeable than dissolves and create interesting transitions that advance your story idea.
Digital video effects
Digital video effects shift or scale the existing image, replacing it with a new image. They are the most dramatic effects. While they create impact, digital video effects can be distracting if used frequently in your video. You should be careful not to make digital video effects too short. Otherwise, the effects can appear jarring.
