TimeWarp
Have your scene play back in slow motion or speed it up, using the TimeWarp feature. When applying a TimeWarp to a clip, a new AVI file is created and added to the Library. The original file is not affected.
For fast motion, the video can be set to play up to ten times faster than normal. This is achieved by removing selected frames throughout the video.
For slow motion, the video can be set to play up to twenty times slower than normal. This is achieved by adding frames throughout the video.
In the Library, select the video clip to TimeWarp.
On the Mode selector, click the TimeWarp button. The TimeWarp dialog appears.

The TimeWarp Factor slider default value is 2.0, which is half (50%) of normal playback speed. Values less than one result in fast motion, while values greater than one result in slow motion.
Adjust the slider to your preference.
The TimeWarp can be applied to the full-length clip, or a shortened version of the clip. To shorten the clip, use the playback controls in the dialog to search for the area you want. Click the Mark Start button to set the beginning of the clip, and the Mark End button to set the end. The marked section will be produced with the TimeWarp effect applied, with the footage outside of the section being discarded.
Click the Browse button to assign a destination folder and name for the file.
Under the Compression drop-down list, it is suggested that you select AVI Compressed, or (if you are working with DV or MPEG-2 files at frame sizes of 720x480 or 720x576) DV. Using AVI uncompressed can result in very large file sizes.
Click the Start button to construct the TimeWarp effect. Depending on the degree to which the slider has been moved from the default value, it may take a few minutes to process the file. When completed, the new AVI file is saved to your hard disk and listed in the Library.
Motion Blending for TimeWarp
Slow motion TimeWarp works by inserting copies of the clip’s frames in between the original frames, so that when played back, the action is slowed down. However, since any copied frames inserted between two original frames are true copies of the originals (and thus do not show any ‘intermediate’ movement between clips), the motion of some objects within the clip may be ragged. Depending on the degree of TimeWarp applied and movement within the clip, this phenomenon can range from hardly noticeable to very pronounced.
The Motion Blending feature is designed to compensate for this by inserting ‘intermediate’ frames between original frames. Roxio VideoWave 5 does this by analyzing the original frames for motion changes, then constructing the copied frames based on this motion change. This results in smoother motion on screen.
For example, let’s say you videotaped a golf swing that shows the club head moving at about 20 cm per frame in the original footage and you want to slow the playback by a factor of four. This means Roxio VideoWave 5 will insert three frames for every original frame, so that you end up with a video file containing four times as many frames as the original. Without motion blend applied, the club head would not move at all for three frames, then it would move 20 cm for the next, and so on.
With Motion Blend applied, Roxio VideoWave 5 examines the changes from one original frame to the next, and applies an intermediate level of motion to the moving objects in the new frames. The result is that each new frame in the file shows the club head moving by 5 cm instead of 20.
There are three Motion Blending settings: Normal (the default setting), None, and Full. Normal applies Motion Blend to some of the added frames, while Full applies it to all added frames. Using the Full setting may result in smoother playback for some videos, but the file will take longer to process.
The accuracy of Motion Blending depends on many factors, including the quality of the original video, the degree of movement between frames, and the amount of TimeWarp applied.
With some material, Motion Blending can introduce video artifacts or emphasize existing ones. If this is the case, use a lower setting or eliminate Motion Blending entirely. If you are using a TimeWarp setting less than 2, it may not be necessary to apply Motion Blending.
Scene Detector
Rather than having to go to the Cutting Room to manually split a clip into several smaller scenes, the Scene Detector can do it for you automatically.
This is a great feature to use if you have several scenes recorded continuously, then capture the video as one long scene in Roxio VideoWave 5. The Scene Detector splits the clip wherever you stopped and restarted the camera for different subject material.
Automatic Scene Detect
In the Library, select the video clip to use for the scene detection.
On the Mode selector, click the Scene Detector button. The Scene Detector dialog appears.

Click the Auto Detect Scenes button. The video plays in the small Viewscreen, while any detected scenes are added below as thumbnails. The Sensitivity of the Scene Detector can be adjusted by moving the slider.
If too many scenes have been detected, you can delete them by highlighting a scene (or Shift-clicking a range of scenes) then clicking the Remove button. The length of the previous scene is expanded to replace the deleted one.
Click OK to close the dialog and have the scenes added to the Library.
Manual Scene Detect
The Scene Detector dialog can also be used to manually add scenes.
From within the Scene Detector dialog, select the manual option.
Click the Play button. The scene plays in the small Viewscreen. You can also drag the Time slider with the mouse, and use the Single Frame Rewind and Single Frame Advance buttons to go to the exact frame you want.
When the section you want has been reached, click the Manually Add Scene button. The new scenes are added below as thumbnails.
Click OK to close the dialog and have the scenes added to the Library.
