Mode selector
Located at the far-left of the interface, the buttons on the Mode selector take you to Roxio VideoWave 5’s specific editing, effects, capture, production, and output functions.

Library
Video clips, sound files, and images are loaded and stored in the Library. Select from the Library tabs to view the media type of your choice. Double-clicking a video clip in the Library places it on the Viewscreen. You can also drag and drop a clip to the Viewscreen or Storyline.

The Library also serves as a list for the many Roxio VideoWave 5 preset effects. Depending on which mode you have selected, additional tabs give access to the preset effects that are available. For example, if the Transition Editor is opened, the Library’s Transition tab shows all available transitions, including an animated preview of each. In many cases you can create and save your own effect styles, which appear in the Library under the Custom tab.

Storyline
The Storyline gives you a visual indication of how your scenes fit together to form the video you are creating. Drag and drop video clips from the Library to the Storyline (once placed on the Storyline, a video clip is referred to as a Scene). To play back a scene, highlight it (or drag and drop it on the Viewscreen) and then click the Play button. To highlight several scenes, Shift-click the range of scenes you want to view.

Place as many scenes as you like on the Library. If there are more scenes present than can be viewed at one time, drag the Storyline left or right with the mouse. To move a scene, drag it with the mouse to the new position. All scenes after the repositioned scene are shifted one space to the right.

Between each scene on the Storyline, there is space for a transition. Transitions determine how one scene changes into another. To view the Transition list, highlight a transition on the Storyline then click the Transition button on the Mode selector (or double-click the transition on the Storyline). The available transitions appear in the Library under the Transitions tab. Place the mouse cursor over a transition in the Library to see how it behaves.

Storyline Menu
Click Save on the File menu to save the contents of the Storyline as a work in progress. The scenes, transitions and any edits you made are preserved as an SBD file that you can load later.

Right-click a scene or transition to see various editing commands. The GoTo menu item lets you quickly find a panel if you have more scenes on the Storyline than are visible on screen.
Color Panel

Right-clicking an empty panel enables the Create Color Panel item on the Storyline menu. Select any color for the panel, and enter a duration (the time you want it to remain on screen during playback). Click the Apply button to enter the color panel on the Storyline as a scene. Color panels are useful as transitions or a backdrop for credits and special effects.

Viewscreen
The Viewscreen lets you view your work at each stage of the video production process. Play back the selected scene(s) on the Storyline (before and after applying effects), preview video from a connected camcorder or VCR, and watch video as it is captured.

Playback controls
The controls under the Viewscreen are similar to those found on a VCR or DVD player, and include Play, Pause, Stop, Fast Forward, Fast Reverse, Single Frame Advance, Single Frame Reverse, and Advance to Beginning or End of clip.

Time slider
Use the Time slider to quickly advance or rewind the scene to the desired spot by dragging the slider right or left. The Time slider also helps you set the point at which any special effects, text, audio or other edits start and finish within the scene.
