Instructional and Learning Strategies for 2nd Grade Students Graphing Lesson

Aspect 1: The Syntax
Learning Goals Instructional Strategies Instructor Actions Student Activities
1. Conduct a classroom survey to collect data. Lecture, demonstration, collaborative classroom project
  • Provide students with survey form
  • Demonstrate how to record survey results on the form
  • Demonstrate how to tally results of classroom survey
  • Interview classmates
  • Record survey results on survey form
  • Tally survey results
2. Understand how to setup, read and interpret a bar graph. Lecture, demonstration
  • Demonstrate how to setup a bar graph
  • Demonstrate how to read a bar graph
  • Demonstrate how to interpret a bar graph
  • Create a bar graph using paper and pencil based upon the results of their classroom survey
3. Use the data present in a bar graph to ask and answer questions about the data contained in the bar graph. Demonstration
  • Provide examples of questions and answers that can be generated from the information recorded on the bar graph.
  • Practice asking and answering questions about the information recorded on the bar graph.
4. Use the "Chart Wizard" tool in Microsoft Excel to create a bar graph based upon the data collected in the classroom survey.
Demonstration
  • Review the purpose of rows and columns on a spreadsheet;
  • Demonstrate how to enter survey data into a spreadsheet
  • Demonstrate how to use the "Chart Wizard" in MS Excel to create a bar graph.
  • Enter the information from their classroom survey into a spreadsheet;
  • Use the "Chart Wizard" in MS Excel to produce a bar graph;
  • Print their bar graph;
  • Compare and contrast their computer generated bar graph with the one created using pencil and paper.
Aspect 2: The social system

Describe the interpersonal structure of the instructional experience.

The students must focus on the different demonstrations that the teacher will provide in the completion of this lesson. The students must be respectful and listen, as the teacher demonstrates how to: conduct, record and tally a survey; how to create a bar graph on paper; and how to recreate the bar graph using MS Excel. The students will work in groups as they compare their electronic bar graph to the one they made on paper.
Aspect 3: The role of the instructor

Describe your general instructional role. For example, will you present material, guide students as they research their own issues, etc?

The teacher will provide the information related to conducting the classroom survey, creating the bar graph on paper and electronically and how to interpret the information provided on the bar graph.
Aspect 4: The support system

Describe the types and amount of instructional, technical, and other resource support required for the instruction (e.g., instructional materials, communication capabilities).

This lesson will be conducted, first in the regular classroom and then followed up with two visits to the computer lab. The students have had past experience in using MS Excel, as first graders, but will need to review how spreadsheets are setup (row vs. columns). The teacher will demonstrate how their data should be entered into their spreadsheet in order to assure that the completed bar graph will provide the correct reflection of their classroom survey. The students will be allowed to print their completed bar graph while in the computer lab on the colored laser printer. Adequate printer supplies (toner cartridge and paper) should be checked for prior to starting the lesson.
