Lisa Stultz: Hi Sonya. I'm finally home!
Sonya Lanham: Hello A long day?
Lisa Stultz: Yes indeed. How do we need to do this?
Sonya Lanham: I can start out as the mentor first if you would llike
Lisa Stultz: Sounds good to me.
Sonya Lanham: Have you met with your teacher?
Lisa Stultz: Yes. I met with her briefly after school today.
Sonya Lanham: Just a reminder--if one of us gets knocked off be sure to
save what we have done.
Lisa Stultz: Okay. How do I save a chat?
Sonya Lanham: Under File on the Menu Bar. It will save as a txt file.
Lisa Stultz: Oh, how obvious was that?
Sonya Lanham: :)
Lisa Stultz: Did you get my email earlier today about what my mentee's
lesson is going to be about?
Sonya Lanham: You wrote the teacher will be teaching a lesson on primary
colors and a particular artist.
Lisa Stultz: Yes, she will have several artists and they will choose, or
be assigned one (I'm not sure which)
Sonya Lanham: The students will also create a powerpoint presentation and
design a flyer.
Lisa Stultz: Yes. She is very excited about the creating the flyer. She
doesn't have alot of expierence being artsy on the computer.
Sonya Lanham: Enthusiasm always helps.
Lisa Stultz: Yes it does!
Sonya Lanham: Have the students worked with Powerpoint before?
Lisa Stultz: Since she will be teaching this to all 4th Graders, some will
and some will not. It depends on what their homeroom teachers have done. She is
sending out emails asking what, if anything they have done in Powerpoint so she'll
know w
Lisa Stultz: here to start with each group. Of course she also needs to
know about their use of the draw toolbar in Word since that is where they will
create their flyers.
Sonya Lanham: Will it be a one page flyer?
Lisa Stultz: Yes. I think that it is going to be an invitation to come
and view the Powerpoint presentations. Each child will send a unique invitation
to their parents.
Sonya Lanham: What will be the quidelines for the flyer?
Lisa Stultz: The flyer will contain multi-columns, an inserted image, at
least two shapes or drawings, using the draw toolbar, a color wheel created by
hand and scanned in, the time date and place of the event and a heading. I think
that is eve
Lisa Stultz: rything.
Sonya Lanham: Wow! How long will this lesson take?
Lisa Stultz: She is shooting for 6 weeks.
Lisa Stultz: She sees each group 1-2 times a week for 50 minutes.
Sonya Lanham: What will be the quidelines for the powerpoint?
Lisa Stultz: They will be working in colaborative groups to create their
presentation. Each student is responsible for one slide about their artist. They
must work as a group to decide on a design, or background. On their slide they
must includ
Lisa Stultz: e a picture of their artist, a link to more information on
the artist and they must answer the following.
Lisa Stultz: Does the artist only use primary color, or does he/she mix
colors in some work? Is their work expensive or moderately priced? Also basic
stuff like when/where born.
Sonya Lanham: How will the students be assessed?
Lisa Stultz: She said that she will be creating a rubric to assess the
powerpoint and another one to assess the flyer. The Internet research will be
a participation grade that will be evident by their work on the PP and flyer.
Sonya Lanham: Sounds like she has put alot of thought into it.
Lisa Stultz: Yes. I think she has a pretty solid plan to build on.
Sonya Lanham: Ready to trade places?
Lisa Stultz: Sure.
Lisa Stultz: What information will the students be looking for about the
Lousiana Purchase?
Sonya Lanham: The students will be given a list of info to look for such
as When did the purchase take place? What was the total cost? Who were the major
characters? How did the purchase affet the size of the US?
Lisa Stultz: Great! Have they done an Internet research project before?
Sonya Lanham: I don't think so or at least not using Powerpoint. The teacher
has little exp using it also.
Lisa Stultz: Will she have a discussion about how to search on the Internet,
or will have a handout "guide" for them?
Sonya Lanham: She will have a discussion on how to search and on ethical
practices reguarding use of copyright materials. The students will copy their
research into Word. They will also have a Works Cited slide.
Lisa Stultz: What guidelines does she have for their Powerpoint presentations?
Sonya Lanham: Ten slides including title and credit slides. Slides will
highlight the findings of their research. They will use a template and insert
images. They may use transitions and animations as long they do not get carried
away.
Lisa Stultz: I think that sounds like a good plan. How will she assess
the students?
Sonya Lanham: A rubric for the presentation. A participation grade will
be given on their research.
Lisa Stultz: I think that is all the questions I can think of. You definitely
have this all under control.
Sonya Lanham: I hope so.
Lisa Stultz: Well shall we save and call it a night? Or do we have more?
Forgive me, I'm usually in bed by 9:30.
Sonya Lanham: Let's save and go to bed.
Lisa Stultz: Thanks Sonya. Chat with you later.
Sonya Lanham: Goodnight!
