Instructional and Learning Strategies

Aspect 1: The Syntax

Student Goals:

Learning Goals
Instructional Strategies
Instructional Actions
Student Activities
1. Increase reading, listening, speaking, phonics, grammar, and spelling Direct Instruction Phonics - provide instruction on vowel variants Observe, listen, ask questions, complete phonics workbook and worksheets
Guided Practice Grammar - Teach/model puncuation, capitalization, Observe, listen, ask questions, complete grammar workbook and worksheets
Discussion Reinforce teacher presentation Watch Brain Pop video on grammar
Peer Collaboration Group students in pairs Practice reading, listening, phonics, and grammar skills

 2. Identify the parts of a letter

Direct Instruction

Teacher presentation of a letter

Observe, listen, and ask questions

Discussion

Reinforce teacher presentation

Utilize guided questions/practice to facilitate learning

Watch Brain Pop video to review parts of a letter

Ask/answer questions, complete guided letter example with teacher

Peer Collaboration

Group students in pairs

Instruct students to write a letter to their partner using all parts of a letter

Write a letter to their partner.

Verify all parts of the letter are included

3. Gain skills and confidence in using scientific measurement tools by measuring, graphing and analyzing the size of different whales

Guided Practice

Review measurement techniques using a ruler (cm/inches)

Review bar graphs

Use rulers to measure, in centimeters, the length of different whales

Students create bar graph of classmate's hair color, guided by teacher

Information Processing/Organization

Demonstrate importance of recording data. Transfer data into charts and graphs

With partner, students create bar graph using the data collected from measurement of whales

4.  Discovery/research skills will be used to learn about whales (pre-selected materials/sites will be provided)

Group Research

Provide basic research skills and materials for students to discover information on whales.

Students will be grouped and asked to record information about specific characteristics of their assigned whale. Utilize books, videos, and Internet to search for information on whales.

Peer Collaboration Guided questions - act as facilitator Each group will record and present findings to class.

5.  Presentation

Direct Instruction

Provide rules for computer lab and expectations for project - grading rubrics (presentation/peer/self) will be discussed

Observe, listen, and ask questions

Facilitate Observe, ask guided questions, and monitor progress
Using Paint, students will illustrate their knowledge of their assigned whale's characteristics. This drawing will be imported into MS Publisher for creation of a postcard using the parts of a letter on one side, while the other side demonstrates their knowledge of whales (through a picture).
Teacher Goals:

1. Develop a higher comfort level of technological tools

Direct Instruction

Increase technology used within classroom

 2. Learn to use technology effectively in the classroom to engage all students and ensure high level student centered learning

Peer Collaboration

Provide opportunities for students to learn through varied learning activities. Discovery learning to be enhanced with a partner

3. Collaborate to discover new ways to assess and evaluate student progress in reaching stated goals

Independent Study

Brainstorm ways to vary student evaluations. Using resources such as Technology Department, Internet, and co-workers.

4. Further student involvement and cooperation in all classroom activities

Brainstorm

Implement projects using multiple learning styles to promote active student involvement

5. Establish a productive working environment

Direct Instruction

Provide clear expectations and rules

6. Use effective teaching practices that are sensitive to each student's cultural heritage, sense of self, view of world, and acquired knowledge and skills

Independent Study

Remain in contact with special education teacher and technology teacher to determine most effective teaching techniques for diverse learners

7.Classroom management in various settings

Direct Instruction

Explain expected behaviors and consequences before lesson begins.

8.Learner centered instruction Collaboration with diverse homogeneous grouping

Ensure students understand the instructions

Professional Goals:

 1. Communicate effectively using questioning strategies to help clarify teacher goals, identify desired outcomes, and anticipate problems and their solutions.

Independent Study

Review MTTC guidelines, practice strategies in all aspects of my life to reinforce my goal

 2. Coach teachers in developing the ability and confidence to implement technology-enhanced lesson plans.

Listen

Questioning Techniques

Be an active listener and develop questioning skills

3. To use coaching/mentoring skills that appeal to different learning styles. Independent Study Build knowledge base by collaborating with my administrator, reading, research, and Internet to enhance my skills by differentiating learning styles
