Alfredo Infante [7:52:27 PM]: Hi Howard!

Howard McNutt [7:52:30 PM]: Hi, Fred.

Howard McNutt [7:53:04 PM]: Let’s first talk about and review the lesson that you will teach.

Alfredo Infante [7:53:44 PM]: I will be teaching a section of science this fall to 5th graders. We will be having a school field trip to Gladys Porter Zoo and I wanted them to be able to show their work as a slide show to student, teachers, and perhaps the internet.

Howard McNutt 7:54:33 PM]: That’s a great idea on getting the students and community involved.

Alfredo Infante [7:54:46 PM]: You know I just got certified and I’m a bit weak with technology and feel that this could be a steping stone for me to use more technology in the classroom..

Howard McNutt [7:54:57 PM]: What concerns do you have about teaching your students a lesson and using computers as a teaching tool?

Alfredo Infante [7:55:18 PM]: I don’t want to look confused or if I don’t know what to do in front of the students.

Howard McNutt [7:56:08 PM]: Well with some basic training oh how to use a digital camera and using Real Slideshow 2.0 I know you will be able to do it.

Alfredo Infante [7:56:25 PM]: I want to put the kids into groups of 4 and have them work collaboratively.

Howard McNutt [7:56:56 PM]: What do you think that you can do to provide support for those students?

Alfredo Infante [7:57:56 PM]: I though thatif I placed them into groups they could help support each other with ideas and answer basic questions on how to use hardware and software.

Howard McNutt [7:57:04 PM]: Sounds good, did you manage to think of meeting the needs of all the students?

Alfredo Infante [7:57:42 PM]: what u mean.

Howard McNutt [8:00:16 PM]: Its always good to look at students IEP and see if students may need extra time or some sort of assistive technologies.

Alfredo Infante [8:01:05 PM]: You know I didn’t think about that. Mrs. Dogers our special ed teacher for the campus would probably be a good person to check with.

Howard McNutt [8:01:44 PM]: So after you have the students grouped, they are going to do to get the students ready for the assignment.

Alfredo Infante [8:01:50 PM]: I was thinking of showing them a film of the different types of animals I planed for them to create a slide show on. Then before the trip show them how to use the digital camera.

Howard McNutt [8:02:05 PM]: So what animals were you going to select and do you have enough cameras to use?

Alfredo Infante [8:03:13 PM]: Since it’s the 5th grade I was thinking on covering the birds, cats, primates and other mammals that can be found at the zoo.

Howard McNutt [8:03:47 PM]: It will be also a good idea to check the zoo out and see what animals are for display and have a handout for them on what may be available for them to take pictures of.

Alfredo Infante [8:04:8 PM]: like kinda of having a handout ready for them after the film and they can organize the animals in order.

Howard McNutt [8:04:32 PM]: Your getting on the right track. Giving students some form of direction for the assignment is a great idea. It would also be beneficial if you could also provide them with a rubric for the assignment then.

Alfredo Infante [8:04:45 PM]: How could I use one? I though it was just used at the end of an assignment to grade them on.

Howard McNutt [8:05:20 PM]: So true, but it would also be a good idea to provide them with a rubric on what you expect each person is doing in the group and what is expected for the assignment. That way it easy to grade all students fairly.

Alfredo Infante [8:06:05 PM]: That’s a great idea. So if a student isn’t doing his work he will receive less points. And the students would be willing to do a little more work to get extra point on the assignments.

Howard McNutt [8:06:42 PM]: That’s exactly right. I would also suggest that you give them a demonstration of what you expect of them before the field trip and a refresher atfter the field trip of what and how to use the software.

Alfredo Infante [8:07:42 PM]: Then they will know up front what I expect. That is also something that I could watch for while they are taking pictures at the zoo and will have an idea of how to set it up. They might also forget how to use the software and by showing them againg afterwards the can relearn how to do it. From there they can assist each other.

Howard McNutt [8:07:53 PM]: While you are monitoring, you can watch to see that the students have assign job to each student. Which student will be taking pictures, which will be creating the storyboard, which will be importing the images and creating the special effect/transitions, and who will be the person adding dialog to the project.

Alfredo Infante [8:08:20 PM]: Yea, I have used Power point  and Real slide show looks a lot like it.

Howard McNutt [8:08:38 PM]: Do you know if the students have used it before?

Alfredo Infante [8:8:05 PM]: I don’t think they have used Real slideshow but I’m pretty sure that most of them have use powerpoint at the elementary. The elementary have been getting a lot of technology grants. Such as Tie and Target Grant.

Howard McNutt [8:8:31 PM]: It’s a great idea to let kids collaborate during projects.

Alfredo Infante [8:11:05 PM]: Kids always learn more from each other than they do the teacher.

Howard McNutt [8:11:31 PM]: They seem to build up a lot of intrinsic motivation that seems go out and get other kids just as involved in the assignments.

Howard McNutt [8:13:17 PM]: Next year I will be in the Computer lab. The teacher we had moved to the high school full time to teach BCIS.

Alfredo Infante [8:13:38 PM]: Yor so lucky.

Howard McNutt [8:13:56 PM]: So if you want to use the lab it wouldn’t be a problem. Just tell me when and I will have all the software and hardware readyfor you.

Alfredo Infante [8:14:07 PM]: Thaks, but wont you still be teaching math?

Howard McNutt [8:14:17 PM]: I will still be teaching 5th grade taks math for three out of the 8 periods we have. Your more than welcome to use the lab during that time or my conference and/or planning period. If I have math class I will just float on over into your classroom.

Alfredo Infante [8:14:24 PM]: That’s good. The only thing I have been argueing about is what to include in the rubric.

Howard McNutt [8:15:35 PM]: I can provide you several web site that have rubric generators that will help create rubrics for you. And if your not sure what to target I can list several specic objectives that you can evaluate their technologica skils and then we can add afew more for collaborative work and content specific work from science.

Alfredo Infante [8:16:25 PM]: I think that it covers my objectives pretty well.

Howard McNutt [8:18:05 PM]: How long do you plan on spending on the project?

Alfredo Infante [8:19:01 PM]: I think it will take an entire week to complete.

Howard McNutt [8:20:33 PM]: How long do you want their presentation to last?

Alfredo Infante [8:21:21 PM]: I want each group to have plenty of time so I want them to have between 15-25 min  to show the slideshow and have the opportunity to talk about any personal experiences that they might want to share.

Howard McNutt [8:21:51 PM]: Is there anything else you can think of that we need to cover?

Alfredo Infante [8:22:04 PM]: I feel that the lesson is preety complete and I am really happy that we talked it out.

Howard McNutt [8:22:27 PM]: I think it going to be a great lesson that will really get kids interested in both animals and technology.

Alfredo Infante [8:22:37 PM]: I think so too.

Howard McNutt [8:22:47 PM]: Thanks for the help

Alfredo Infante [8:23:04 PM]: No problem and thanks for your suggestions

Howard McNutt [8:23:18 PM]: no prob…Bye!
