Pre-conference Coaching Sessions for Sharyn Grisham and Lanelle Hopson

Lanelle Hopson - Coach
Sharyn Grisham - Mentor
July 28, 2004

Lanelle Hopson: What are your plans for this mentoring experience?
Sharyn S. Grisham: I am going to plan an inservice for 21 NEW employees on my campuse. We only have about 85 teachers total.
Lanelle Hopson: Sounds very challenging. Do you have to develop all the material/
Sharyn S. Grisham: My inservice will be to help them through the grade and attendance software we use.
Sharyn S. Grisham: One goal I want to set is to make sure they are confident with the software and have a positive attitude to the first day of school.
Lanelle Hopson: How will you deal with those new teachers who don't want to do elecronic grading and attendence?
Sharyn S. Grisham: They have no choice. It is mandatory in our district.
Sharyn S. Grisham: That's when I will work on attitude.
Lanelle Hopson: I understand.
Lanelle Hopson: I think your goal sounds great.
Sharyn S. Grisham: It will be different for me because of the adult learners, but probably not so different from high school students.
Lanelle Hopson: How will you know that they will feel ready for the first day of school.
Sharyn S. Grisham: I hope that the enthusiasm will shine through for all to see, but I will probably just ask them and then be available to answer questions when the day arrives.
Lanelle Hopson: Gotcha. So you are actually mentoring the adult students/
Sharyn S. Grisham: I will be working with one of the assistant principals who will conduct the inservice with me.
Sharyn S. Grisham: I am sure that I will have to do the hands-on instruction, but the principal will "preside"
Lanelle Hopson: Do you have any other goals beside th ones you mentioned?
Sharyn S. Grisham: Not at this time. I am sure that as we plan, there will be more. I still want to work on my mentoring skills. That should be a goal.
Lanelle Hopson: That's good that the principal can see you in action and witness your effective ness. He might even give you a raise!
Sharyn S. Grisham: Right. Raise---not. But I wouldn't mind him recognizing my worth.
Sharyn S. Grisham: I think we are done. OK?

Sharyn S. Grisham: Lanelle, what do you plan for your second mentoring experience?
Lanelle Hopson: I plan on meeting with Steve Howard , high school Environmental Science teacher to discuss a lesson plan on Biomes of the 48 Contiguous States
Sharyn S. Grisham: Have you worked with Steve before?
Lanelle Hopson: Yes, casually. He is a very good teacher and very interested in technology.
Sharyn S. Grisham: Great. That's a good start. Is there anything in particular that you want to set as a goal? Maybe something you learned from last time?
Lanelle Hopson: I think that my listening skills will always have to be worked on. My main focus this time will be to prepare the teacher to present the lesson.
Sharyn S. Grisham: Your listening skills are good. You underestimate yourself. Since school is about to start, this should be a useful lesson.
Sharyn S. Grisham: We will continue with goals on listening. Is there anything else?
Lanelle Hopson: Still unsure at this point... That will do for now.
Sharyn S. Grisham: This is hard, I know, since we haven't actually completed the whole lesson from the first time. But it should be easier with our understanding and experience.
Lanelle Hopson: I think so. But it is still hard for me to get in the "mode" of thinking mentoring.
Sharyn S. Grisham: When you meet with Steve, you will know more about his lesson ideas and what he wants the kids to learn. We will talk more later. Want to ask me now?
