Laquita Barton: Are you ready?
Jason Huddleston: ok
Laquita Barton: I would like to be the mentor first....if that;s ok
Jason Huddleston: fire away
Laquita Barton: Be sure to save this when we are through.
Jason Huddleston: do we have to do more than one?
Laquita Barton: One for you and one for me, I suppose...
Jason Huddleston: ok
Laquita Barton: Or should they be together?
Jason Huddleston: That's what's vague in the lesson, lets each do one just to be sure.
Laquita Barton: Ok here goes....
Laquita Barton: Jason, what is the main goal for your lesson?
Jason Huddleston: Its a geography lesson, intro to map skills
Jason Huddleston: so the goal is for students to read and interpret maps and their components
Laquita Barton: What grade level?
Jason Huddleston: 5th
Laquita Barton: Good
Laquita Barton: How do you plan to guide the student to identify latitude and loongitude?
Jason Huddleston: Each student will have their own atlas with a 2D globe. I will instruct from the overhead and with a demo globe
Laquita Barton: Will you be using an infocus or internet connection along with the lesson?
Jason Huddleston: In the initial teach we will be using paper maps and globes, but as the lesson develops I plan to use more visuals.
Jason Huddleston: I plan to use the internet in an extension activity
Laquita Barton: Sounds fun.
Laquita Barton: Will the students be working independently or in groups?
Jason Huddleston: Both, in the initial teach time they are independent but during the application portion of the lesson they will be in pairs
Laquita Barton: What information do you plan to introduce with the Power Point presentation?
Jason Huddleston: I will create a review game to review the vocabulary and concepts of the lesson. There are a variety of tools in PP that can make this interactive
Laquita Barton: Will the students each have a computer? or will this be a group effort?
Jason Huddleston: I would use the video projector to involve the class as a whole for the main review, but I would also have a variation of the slide show on the 3 student computers in the classroom for students who need additional review.
Laquita Barton: In the evaluation, how will you structure this for the students? Is it a formal or informal evaluation?
Jason Huddleston: The review game will be an informal evaluation, I will be able to tell if most of the students grasp the concepts. I would use a more formal evaluation on the following day such as a vocabulary quiz or other test.
Laquita Barton: Have you considered design concepts, equity and access of assistive technology for the lesson?
Jason Huddleston: Design concepts relating to what exactly?
Jason Huddleston: As far as equity of access, I try not to assign any computer related assignments for homework if the are for a grade. We go to the lab.
Laquita Barton: To accommodate students who need assistive technology such as specially designed software, etc.
Jason Huddleston: Ah, no. I guess by using more visuals I might accomodate most special needs students.
Laquita Barton: Sounds good. We're through with our first conference.
Jason Huddleston: Cool
Laquita Barton: Let me save this and we'll get started again.
Laquita Barton: Jason....Lets speak informally for a minute.
Jason Huddleston: shoot
Laquita Barton: I do think you need to add one more professionall goal to yours....on addressing the equity and access of assistive technology.
Jason Huddleston: ok, I shall
Laquita Barton: I left that off my plan, and I will be adding it because it is on our PD
Jason Huddleston: good idea
Laquita Barton: I'm ready whenever you are.
Jason Huddleston: ok
Jason Huddleston: Laquita what is your goal for this lesson?
Laquita Barton: First graders will be reviewing the sounds A-E. for English Language Arts Standards.
Jason Huddleston: How do you plan to introduce the concept?
Laquita Barton: The Infocus projector will be used to illustrate objects that have a beginning sound of A-E.
Jason Huddleston: How will the students participate in the lesson?
Laquita Barton: Notice on the Learning Objectives, I listed that the students would demonstrate body language that listening akills are being used. Do you think I am on track herea/
Jason Huddleston: Yes, I'm just going through some of the questions I saw used in the sample.
Laquita Barton: Also, The students will follow direstions in quietly watching projected screen, asking questions when appropriate concerning the sounds.
Jason Huddleston: How will you be evaluating the students progress through the lesson?
Laquita Barton: In 2 ways. The students will use Hyper Studio to play a matching game; there is also a hand-out the students will complete that is a jigsaw puzzle using words with the sounds introduced.
Jason Huddleston: When you are using the video projector, will the students be responding orally at that time?
Laquita Barton: Yes, questions and discussions will be encouraged.
Jason Huddleston: Great
Jason Huddleston: What specifically will you be looking for to determine if the students are "getting it"?
Laquita Barton: Do you have any suggestions?
Laquita Barton: Actually, the jigsay puzzle and the matching game will reflect whether they recognize the sounds.
Laquita Barton: Each student will have a coputer in the lab. There are 20 students in the class.
Laquita Barton: Is there anything else we need to cover?
Jason Huddleston: Let me get the order straight, initial teach (video projector showing objects with the a/e sould), jigsaw puzzle, then matching game is that right?
Laquita Barton: The video projector showing objects with the sounds; matching game, then the jugsaw puzzle.
Jason Huddleston: ok, so my question would be what does the student need to demonstrate before moving from the initial teach to the next activity which is the matching game?
Jason Huddleston: sorry if I'm overdoing this...
Laquita Barton: Actually, I should be able to tell by the student/teacher interaction as the viauals are being presented and students are asking/answering questions pertaining to the objects.
Jason Huddleston: I would agree
Jason Huddleston: What will be your formal evaluation method?
Laquita Barton: There will only be the jigsaw puzzle in this one lesson. As other sounds are introduced later, a formal evaluation will be given.
Jason Huddleston: ok
Jason Huddleston: That sounds good
Jason Huddleston: Done?
Laquita Barton: Thanks. Lets save.
