Small Group Interaction

Applying Technology
1. Transparency Maps on overhead projector  to introduce concept.
2. Overhead - Vocabulary lists: Map terminology

1. Use a hurricane tracking map to familiarize students with long. and lat.
2. Use PowerPoint and video projector to display tracking map

1. Group students into learning teams of 3 or 4.
2. Orally question class on map reading skills.

The use of PowerPoint allows students to see the process of map reading.  It also allows the use of video clips which serve to reinforce the concept
1. Use atlas books to practice locating parts of a map.
2. Copy vocabulary list from overhead

1. Use copy of tracking map to see how latitude and longitude systems work in tracking weather, follow visuals in PowerPoint presentation.

1. Work as a team to answer teacher led questions.
2. Write questions and answers individually.

Applied Technology
1. Use global map (2D globe) to locate the key lat. and long. lines
2. Using PowerPoint, provide students with latitude and longitude coordinates.
3, Use tracking map (within PowerPoint) to show location of coordinates.

1. Oral questioning:
- Where are maps read and used in real life?
- When have you used a map?

1. Use a handheld GPS receiver to demonstrate how modern cartography works.
2. Leave classroom (playground classroom) and demonstrate how GPS works.

1. Oral questioning:
- Where are GPS systems used?
- How do GPS systems improve map reading?
2. Use the internet to find uses for GPS systems.

Using the GPS receiver creates a perfect connection between maps and real life.
1. Locate the equator and prime meridian on the tracking map.
2. Locate given coordinates on tracking map.

3. Verify locations using PowerPoint presentation.

1. Answer and write answers to oral questions.

1. Observe and record the changes in the GPS readout as class moves around the playground.

1. Use the internet to locate answers and then write their answers in paragraph form.
Research map making and map history
Research Project
(lecture)
1. Display pictures (using PowerPoint) of antique maps and compare them to modern maps.

1. Students will use the internet to research how ancient maps were made and their importance in explorations.

Discussion

Discussion
1. Use open-ended questions to stimulate productive planning sessions.

2. Probe areas of weakness that lead teacher to discover alternatives rather than pointing them out directly.

1. What areas of growth still need attention?
2. What is your comfort level with the technologies implemented in this lesson?
2. What goals have you achieved personally in preparing this lesson?

Social System of Instruction
This lesson requires a high degree of interaction.  To be successful, the students must be trained and prepared for group and team activities.  Students will need to be able to contribute to a discussion and provide answers to oral questions in an orderly fashion.  The instructor will be required to allow students to discover answers throught the discussion and not just give the answer.  This requires a high degreee of patience on the part of the teacher.  Finally, the instructor must create an atmosphere of discovery and exploration for this lesson.

Role Of Instructor
This lesson will require the instructor to be both an information provider as well as an expedition leader.  The instructor will be doing a great deal of questioning in this lesson, leading the students to the answer without giving it to them.  The instructor will also use technology to stimulate interest and to engage disconnected learners in the lesson.

Support Systems
A low level of support is required for this lesson.  Technology support will be required for the video projector and GPS system.  The GPS receiver may have to be aquired outside of the campus.
