Age

9-13
Use collaborative groups.
Academic Range
Reading levels range from grades 1/5
with several students below grade level.
Constraint
Create a
lesson that keeps all students actively
involved. Set-up Peer-tutoring within the lesson.

Have students discuss/share quilt patterns that might be found in their culture.
Educational Level
5th Grade
Give them the tools that they need to complete the task and be there to help, if needed.
Disability/ Impairment
Learning Disabled, ADD, ADHD
Keep the lesson very structured so all students know what is expected of them.
Give them a copy of the expectations and the rubric.
Developmentally Appropriate
The lesson is appropriate for the developmental stage of the students.
Allow for student input during the lesson.
Prerequisite Knowledge
Working knowledge of patterns.
Basic knowledge of reflection, translation and rotation
Have students bring in a family quilt. Or a picture of one.
Related Experience
Students will have experienced using rotation and reflection in the software program Fripple Town.
Provide connections to previous
learning.
Perception of Role as Student
The student's role is to learn through participation.
Have students fill out their KWL chart after the introduction of the lesson.
Motivation for Learning
The students in this grade level are a mix from very excited about learning to affraid that they can't .
Keep the lesson up-beat. Focus on the positive. When creating quilt squares be very positive and mention what you see that is looking good.
Attitude toward Subject
Interested, but not overly enthusiastic
Show enthusiasm for the lesson before you begin and throughout.
Expectations from Course
Students will understand and be able to demonstrate the difference between reflection, translation and rotation
Stay very positive so the students feel comfortable trying something new.
Competitiveness
The students will work in collaborative groups with no competition.
Create a positive climate for students to work well together by making the groups thoughtfully with what I know of the students' temperments

Advantage
Have students focus on one goal per class period to keep the stress level down.

Advantage
Students are familiar with their surroundings, which makes them more comfortable.

1. The students will understand the difference between reflection, translation and rotation
2. The students will demonstrate the difference between reflection, translation and rotation
The students will have discussed reflection, translation and rotation before this lesson.
The will bring in family quilts to show their classmates.
I imagine that the difficulty will not be in the learning, rather that students will not be ready for the lesson to end. It is a fun and engaging lesson.
Create a quilt design, and then using reflection, translation and rotation make a 4 part paper quilt.
Explain or demonstrate the difference between reflection, translation and rotation in creating one or more of the following:
PowerPoint Presentation
Clay Animation
Video Demonstration in iMovie
