| Factor | Characteristic | |
| Age / Academic Range | The students are in the 3rd grade so the age range is from 8 - 9 years old | disadvantage - limited experience on technology |
| Sex Distribution |
The class is mainly made up of girls with females being 65% of the class | advantage |
|
Racial, Ethnic Diversity |
The ethnic make up is heavily white. In the class their are 19 students with 14 being white, 2 African American, and 3 Hispanic. The socioeconomic status is lower middle class or middle class. | disadvantage - home use of computers is not readily available |
|
Educational Level |
3rd grade | disadvantage - limited technology experience |
|
Disability or Impairment |
One student several handicapped with limited arm movements | disadvantage |
| Developmentally Appropriate |
This lesson will be developed by a 3rd grade teacher with the skills for creating developmentally appropriate materials | advantage |
| Prerequisite Knowledge | None required | advantage |
| Related Experience | The students can reflect on past science experiments and real life simple machines - although none is needed | advantage |
| Perception of Role as Student | The students are generally given book work, handouts etc. to complete or to learn a new concept | disadvantage |
| Motivation for Learning | The students will be willing to work outside of the class when they get to check out the digital cameras to use. | advantage - most students do not have access to this technology outside of the school and will be motivated to work with it |
| Attitude Toward Subject | Due to the hands-on type of assignment, I think the students will be eager to work | advantage |
| Expectations from Course | Pass TAKS :-) The students will come away from this lesson with new skills in computers and in building simple machines | disadvantage |
| Competitiveness | The "show and tell" at the end of the project could have them competing against each other. | advantage |

Main Subject Matter Topic -
3rd Grade Science Class. The students will learn about Simple Machines. Then research how to build a simple machine to
find step by step instructions on creating their simple machine. After finding directions they are to build the machine at home.
Each student will check out a digital camera and video tape the making of the machine. The students bring back the video and
the simple machine for a presentation.
Sub Topics:
Creating Simple Machines. The teacher will teach the requirements and lesson on simple machines.
Internet Research Skills
Digital Camera Skills
Presentation Skills
Readiness to Learn
The students are on target in learning their science curriculum.
Degree of Learning Difficulty:
Various levels of computer experience will be encountered - the disadvantage will be in this area. The advantage will be the
willingness to learn and use the equipment.
Teaching Strategies:
Communicating with the teacher will be my main strategy. I am looking at pairing for this assignment or assigning the simple machine
based on difficulty of creation and student skill level
