Learner factors that may impact learner-centered instruction.

Analyzing the student learners is a means to identify the learner characteristics that will likely impact the process and outcomes of the learning experience.

Factors
Description
Advantage or Constraint
Initial Ideas for Maximizing Positive Factors or Minimizing Negative Factors
Age / Academic Range The students are in fifth grade, which makes the average age 9 to 10.   - Limited experience in research therefore a lesson will be taught prior to the library research.
Sex Distribution The class is 58% male and 42% female.   - Sometimes boys tend to be off task. I will monitor the entire and promote on task behavior.
Racial, Ethnic Diversity The class is 79% white and 21% Hispanic. Four of the nineteen students are listed as "At Risk".
-
This creates a barrier to communication. Two of the students have a limited English vocabulary.
Educational Level 5th graders   - This is a disadvantage because a foundation of prior research knowledge is not there. The students are still building their basic skills.
Disability or Impairment None + I have two special education students, and I do not foresee a problem with him completing the assignment.  If a problem arises I will let them continue at a slower pace. Writing the research paper will be done in the special education language arts class.
Developmentally Appropriate All consistent with age + The librarian, fifth grade teacher, and computer lab assistant will plan the lesson using the TEKS. Sharing the development of the lesson insure that each person can concentrate on a specific area and that it is developmentally appropriate.
Prerequisite Knowledge None   - Students will be learning basic research skills.
Related Experience The students will apply the TAAS writing skills acquired in the forth grade. + Students will rely on the forth grade writing process to help them in completing the written paper.
Perception of Role as Student The students normally read from the social studies textbook, discuss the information, and complete a worksheet. + This allows an opportunity to apply their research skills and be more involved with the lesson and learning process.
Motivation for Learning "Show and Tell" + The motivation will be presenting the information on the computer and completing a display board for open house.
Attitude Toward Subject Excited + The students are interested in social studies and they like to be involved in the lesson as they research, write the paper, and complete the multimedia project.
Expectations from Session Higher level thinking skills + The students will be expected to learn U.S. History based off the TEKS. This will be a learning experience they will remember.
Competitiveness Yes + The multimedia project should inspire the students to complete their projects to the best of their ability.

Environment factors that may impact learner-centered instruction.

Analyzing the environment is a means to identify the issues that will impact the (a) process of the design and production, (b) implementation, and (c) outcomes of the learning experience

Factors Description Advantage or Constraint Initial Ideas for Maximizing Positive Factors or Minimizing Negative Factors
Design and Production Factors:
Budget Available
NA - The budget is limited, but it should not affect the project.
Materials Required
reference books, Internet, scanners, printers, and computers + The school is already equipped with the necessary materials.
Production Equipment Available
NA + No production equipment will be needed to complete this project.
Time for Design and Production
Three weeks - We are allowing two weeks for researching and writing the paper and two weeks (one week overlaps) for typing the paper and completing the multimedia project. I hope the students do not get board with the project before they complete it.
Department Technology Requirements
None +   The necessary technology is already in place and the technology department will not be involved in the project unless there is a problem with the computer lab and/or server.
Implementation Factors:
Class Size
19 students   - The class size allows for off task behavior; therefore the class will have to be closely monitored.
Class Period Length
Library - 150 minutes (5 days with 30 minutes each day)

Language Arts - 45 minutes each day for two weeks

Computer Lab - 60 minutes each day for two weeks

- The library time is the main concern. The students barely get started and it is time for them to wrap up; therefore, more computer time might be scheduled.
Location
Library, Classroom, Computer Lab + Students will be moving around and completing the project in different areas of the school. This way they are not confined to the classroom.
Seating Arrangement
Assigned research groups, classroom seating, and computer assignments + The assignment of seating will help in monitoring the behavior.
Lighting
Adequate + Lighting should not be an issue.
Temperature
Adjusted + The temperature will be adjusted according to the weather.
Noise
Will occur - Some noise will occur as the students are researching in the library, editing each other's paper, and helping each other in the computer lab.
Equipment
Computers, software, scanner, printer + The library, computer lab, and classroom are equipped with the necessary equipment.
Technology Support Computer Lab Assistant +   The computer lab assistant will take care of any problems that arise in the computer lab and/or in the classroom.
Outcome Factors:
State Requirements 5th grade Language Arts, Social Studies, and Technology TEKS +   This lesson will cover many of the TEKS required in the fifth grade.
Employer Needs
Integration of technology, library, and classroom activities +   The lesson will be developed by three different individuals which will specialize in the area of their training.
Co-worker Needs
Willing to work together in a cooperative setting + The students benefit from the cooperation between the various areas of the school.
Student Needs
Students will learn how to research a topic and present the project in a written and visual form. +   The students will be using higher level thinking skills and will be involved in the learning process instead of completing worksheets.
Other Factors: None +   NA

Content factors that may impact learner-centered instruction.

Analyzing the content is a means to identify in general terms the topics to be addressed in your course and to analyze these topics in terms of the prequisite sub-topics, and degree of learning difficulty

Main Topics Sub-Topics (What Is Involved In Learning Each Main Topic?) Readiness To Learn (Prerequisites Mastered) Degree of Learning Difficulty (Real / Imagined) Possible Instructional Strategies to Reduce or Manage Learning Difficulty
The project is to research and create a written paper and visual presentation on an U.S. President. Research Skills:
  • Form questions
  • Prewriting
  • Use organizers; multiple sources; graphics
  • Summarize
  • Produce projects and reports

Writing Skills:

  • Write to report
  • Capitalization and punctuation
  • Accurate spelling
  • Correct grammar
  • Drafts
  • Revisions/ Editing/ Proofreading
  • Use prior knowledge
  • Take notes

Technology Skills:

  • Expand and use basic skills learned since 3rd grade
The students are at various development stages, but as a whole group they are ready for this challenge. The lesson is going to be a challenge for students to stay on task. This will be a different type of lesson for them and they will have to adjust to the unstructured classroom and learn how to solve questions and problems that might arise on their own. The classroom teacher will be involved with helping the students with their research, writing the paper, and creating the final project. The librarian will be involved with the research and the computer lab assistant will be involved with the technology. This is going to take patience and communication among the teachers to make this lesson work.

Level of Students:

The special education and ESL students will be involved in researching a president. The president will be one that is familiar and will have many resources. They will also be given a template to help them write their paper. The G/T student will be assigned a president that will involve more researching.
