Texture

Texture is the element of design that refers to how things feel, or how they look as if they might feel on the surface.

The roughness or smoothness of a texture can be recognized by means of the shadows. A smooth texture reflects light evenly, while a rough texture reflects light unevenly.

In the composite image to the left, notice speckled-looking key toward the top of the arrangement of the keys. The different tints and shadings of the key give it the appearance of texture. All of the rest of the keys consist of one color so their textures appear to be smooth.
