Space

Space is the element of design that shape and form exists in. It is the emptiness or area between, around, above, below or within objects.

Positive space is the area occupied by a shape or form. Negative space is the empty spaces between the shapes or forms.

In the composite image to the left, the negative space is the empty space around the keys and the space in the hole in the keys. The positive space is the area occupied by the keys, which are free-form shapes.
