Lisa Rogers[11:16:12
AM]: hello
Paula Brown[11:16:14
AM]: Hello
Paula Brown[11:16:25
AM]: How much time do you have
Lisa Rogers[11:17:01 AM]: I don't
have class until 12:53, What I think we are to talk about is what
are we going to say to our campus mentoree
to get them started thinking about creating a lesson plan with technology.
Then we are to talk about our specific professional goals for us,
like better questioning strategies, listen more, more wait time,
etc. I think we are trying to make this harder than it is
Paula Brown[11:17:42
AM]: Sounds good - Can we just copy and paste the chat window??
Lisa Rogers[11:18:02
AM]: Yes, I believe so,
Paula Brown[11:20:23 AM]: I was looking
at the lesson plans and these are the areas: Content TEKS, Content and Cognitive Goals, Learning
Connections, Procedures for Learning, Teaching Strategy, Student
Work Sample, Tech Connection, Tech Management Strategy, etc
Paula Brown[11:20:40
AM]: How do we want to start??
Lisa Rogers[11:21:11
AM]: I can go first if you want. My campus mentoree
is a 7th grade sceince teacher who just
got a projector in her classroom, so she has never done any powerpoints,
united streaming or basically anything. I am going to have to show
her all the possibilites that technology can do for her. She is going
to have to change her teachiing style
some to accomodate student learner-centered instruction, from the sage on the stage
to the guide on the side.
Lisa Rogers[11:22:32 AM]: The content
TEKS and content goals will not change, but the procedures for learning
will be more student driven, like the students watching a united
streaming video instead of readhing out
of the book
Lisa Rogers[11:23:36
AM]: The teacher will have to have a backup plan if the technology
is not available that day or time.
Paula Brown[11:24:01
AM]: Will you have guidelines for the tech part of the lesson and do
you know what that will be yet?
Lisa Rogers[11:24:31
AM]: I don't know what she wants to do, I talked to her today and listed
possiblities.
Paula Brown[11:25:16
AM]: Will you cover management skills for using technology ( in a lab
setting or on student computers in a classroom)?
Lisa Rogers[11:26:21
AM]: We don't have lab computers available or student computers in
the classroom, so this will have to be a project that the material
is presented using technology and not the students using it.
Paula Brown[11:27:09
AM]: This is kind of hard to do without a particular lesson in mind
- so I'm pretending
Paula Brown[11:27:40
AM]: What will she look for when observing the students while she is
using technology to present
Lisa Rogers[11:28:04
AM]: I think that is what we are suppose to do. We are to generally
talk about we need to think about when we talk to our campus mentoree.
Lisa Rogers[11:28:44 AM]: If they
understand the material better, are the students more engaged, more
interested, which equals more learning going on
Paula Brown[11:29:35
AM]: WIll the students perhaps be able to
present something using the projector
Lisa Rogers[11:30:43 AM]: That's an
idea, if they did a project and one of the choices was to do a PowerPoint
instead of a poster, then the students could use the projector.
Otherwise the product the students produce may be the same as before
but she may get better answers
Paula Brown[11:31:39
AM]: They could even do a project on paper and the teacher could scan
it in to show to the class while the students talked about it.
Lisa Rogers[11:32:04
AM]: We do have some Elmo's availabe, so
maybe they could use them.
Paula Brown[11:32:25
AM]: How could this be connected to real life for the students?
Lisa Rogers[11:33:12
AM]: Don't know - I guess it will depend on what the lesson is
Paula Brown[11:33:23
AM]: How could reluctant students be encouraged to participate
Paula Brown[11:33:37
AM]: Or How could you support reluctant students
Lisa Rogers[11:34:31
AM]: I've noticed that shy students will do a powerpoint
and have it talk for them so they don't have to stand up in class
and talk. those are all good questions for me to ask.
Paula Brown[11:34:51
AM]: What is your goal for the teacher
Lisa Rogers[11:35:21
AM]: My goal for her would to become more comfortable with technology,
to be able to use it without me
Paula Brown[11:35:39
AM]: What would her goal be for the students
Lisa Rogers[11:36:13
AM]: I guess that would depend on the lesson. My goal for myself would
be to ask better questions, use questioning stategies.
Paula Brown[11:36:32
AM]: How will she model what she wants the student to do
Lisa Rogers[11:37:15
AM]: She could create an example PowerPoint of what their project should
look like when completed.
Lisa Rogers[11:38:32
AM]: I think you have covered everything - let's do yours
Paula Brown[11:39:20
AM]: Okay - My mentee will be a High School
Geometry teacher. We don't
have a specific lesson in mind but probably something with angles??
Lisa Rogers[11:40:05
AM]: Will you have guidelines for the tech part of the lesson? will it be in the lab or classroom computers, or presentation
monitor
Paula Brown[11:41:29
AM]: He will be using a Smartboard in the
classroom
Lisa Rogers[11:42:41
AM]: will the students be coming up to the smart board to answer/present?
What will he look for when observing the students
.
Paula Brown[11:43:15
AM]: Yes the students will be involved in an interactive lesson
Lisa Rogers[11:43:58
AM]: How could this be connected to real life for the students?
Paula Brown[11:46:10
AM]: Hopefully, we can find a lesson off the Smart website that does
connect Geometry concepts to something they will encounter in real
life. When observing the students he will look for
whether the student is understanding the
concept or just guessing.
Lisa Rogers[11:46:24
AM]: our students love using the smart board so I doubt that you will
have reluctant students, but what are the plans for engaging those
few
Paula Brown[11:47:29
AM]: I will help him develop strategies to help the students become
at ease with the Smartboard. They will practice on the Smartboard
so the new factor will not overshadow the lesson.
Lisa Rogers[11:47:57
AM]: What would be his goal for the students?
Paula Brown[11:48:08 AM]: He will
also look for a related United Streaming video to show and use the
Smart Video Player to interact with that
Lisa Rogers[11:48:17
AM]: How will he measure what they have learned, what will they produce?
Paula Brown[11:48:55
AM]: The goal for his students will be to master the Geometry concept.
As far as the technology, it will be success in managing
the use of the smartboard
Lisa Rogers[11:49:33
AM]: Is this teacher comfortable with the smart board? What are your
goals for him?
Paula Brown[11:50:52
AM]: No he is not comfortable with it at all. He is a brand new teacher. He came after school started. My goal for him is to be comfortable with the
use of the smartboard, projector and elmo. Right now, he has small classes so I will work
with him in other areas also.
Lisa Rogers[11:51:27
AM]: What are your professional
goals as a mentor?
Paula Brown[11:52:14
AM]: As far as assessment, since his classes are small, a quiz on the
smartboard is a possibility. But paper assessment will reinforce that they
have mastered the objectives associated with the lesson
Paula Brown[11:54:02 AM]: My professional
goals as a mentor are to be a true mentor to my mentee and not overpower him with my suggestions but rather
guide him to be empowered as a teacher.
To help him to more confident in the use of technology while he is
becoming more confident as a teacher.
Lisa Rogers[11:54:29
AM]: Sounds like you have mentored teachers before and know what questions
to ask and how to do this.
Lisa Rogers[11:54:55
AM]: Do you think we have covered everything?
Paula Brown[11:55:11
AM]: Yes, but it's been too easy to tell them how to do it instead
of helping them to discover it
Lisa Rogers[11:59:16
AM]: Thanks it has been very
helpful
Paula Brown[11:59:30
AM]: Thanks - talk to you later
Lisa Rogers[11:59:34
AM]: bye
