Instructional Learning Strategies

Aspect 1: The Syntax
Learning Goals
Instructional Strategies
Instructor Actions
Student Actions
Student
The student will know that the natural world includes earth materials
Connect to Prior Learning/Knowledge
Whole Group Discussion
Ask questions like, "If you had magic glasses that let you see what this paper was made from, what would you see?"

Record answers and ask for what they have in common

Ask students to brainstorm other items that might fit in the list

Respond to questions (ex. "I would see a tree when I looked at the paper with magic glasses"

Decide what the items have in common

Brainstorm other natural resources

Direct Instruction
Use of media/videos
Note Taking
Check for Understanding
Whole Group Discussion

Show Video- "Learning About Natural Resource" from United streaming

Provide listening guide to students

Stop video after each section to discuss what students learned about Natural resources

Watch Video

Complete listening guide

Participate in discussion, correct or add to listening guide as needed

Paired Reading
Use of Technology
Collaboration

After Video add to the list of resources if needed

Assign students to work in pairs to read Science Text pp.C88-91 to find more resources for the list

Provide computer lab time, explain how to use Kidspiration to classify resources

Contribute items to the list of resources

Read with partner and add to list

Students classify resources as renewable nonrenewable, or inexhaustible
Small Group Instruction, Use of Technology. Monitoring student work, Use of Rubric, Collaboration

Facilitate Groups- Each group will trace the life cycle of a resource such as aluminum. Groups research how it is collected, processed, products made from it, use of products and how it is disposed

Create rubric for formal/informal assessment

Groups complete research and arrange the events in the correct sequence

Choose a means to display information such as Power Point, Kidspiration diagram, etc.

Use rubric to self-assess and track progress
Student
Recognize that recycling saves resources

Direct Instruction, Probing Questions, Whole Group Instruction

Remind students about 3 types of resources. "Ask what could be the danger of carelessly using Earth's materials"

Use guided questions as students read to find out what recycling is and how it saves resources
(Science Text pp. C100-C104)

Use prior knowledge to infer answer to question

Participate in reading and discussion to discover what recycling is and how it saves resources

Small Group Instruction, Use of Technology. Monitoring student work, Use of Rubric, Collaboration

Facilitate Group Projects-
Groups decide on a new product that can be created from recycled items. The group must make a model of the product and create an advertisement to sell the product

Provide rubric for formal/informal assessment

Groups chose a product to create from recycled materials and write advertisement.

Groups make model of new product

Use productivity software to design advertisement

Use rubric to self-assess and track progress

Teacher
Use instructional strategies that are technology enhanced and provide for classroom management
Use of Technology, Use of Rubrics, Organization of class, Posting/explaining objectives. Re-focus students to learning

Download video from United streaming

Plan for group structure and guidelines

Create rubrics to be used as informal group assessment as well as formal assessment

Teacher Observation

Lab preparation- Reserve time, Kidspiration and Productivity Software

Teacher
Develop appropriate learning experiences for diverse learners
Collaboration, Grouping Class, Re-focus students to learning
Collaborate with appropriate specialists to meet the needs of diverse learners

Study IEP

Group assignment considerations

Use appropriate assistive technology

Professional
Develop staff training for teachers that integrates United Streaming into instruction
Organization of Class, Direct instruction, Active participation, Summary/Closure
Organize resources, prepare account information

Discuss needs of teachers as relates to resources that would enhance instruction

Provide hands on exploration of United Streaming

Reflection- ask "What did you learn today that you can use tomorrow in your classroom?
Professional
Use effective coaching strategies that encourage teachers to develop goals for student-centered learning
Collaboration, Wait Time, Probing Questions

Listen for key words in mentoring conversations and ask questions that shift focus to student-centered learning

Paraphrase and clarify to confirm student centered learning

Aspect 2: The Social System
Describe the interpersonal structure of the instructional experience
As whole groups, students will combine a list of resources from prior knowledge, watching a video, and reading from their text. After understanding more about resources and classifications, students will work in groups to create a life cycle of a particular resource. Building upon this knowledge the students will then discuss the idea of recycling in a whole group. In groups students will create a new product that is made from recycled materials. They must create an advertisement that will boast of the new product's features.
Aspect 3: The Role of the Instructor
Describe your general instructional role. For example, will you present material, guide students as the research their own issues, etc.
The instructor will guide students to understand main topics and vocabulary. facilitate groups as they complete their projects., to research their chosen topics. He will monitor progress and redirect if necessary. He will provide a listening guide to focus students' attention during the video and rubrics to be used as formal/informal assessment.
Aspect 4: The Support System
Describe the types and amount of instructional, technical, and other resource support required for the instruction

Technical Support

  • Computer Lab
  • Printer
  • Productivity Software (StarOffice, Kidspiration, etc.)
  • Internet Explorer
  • Projector
