Learner factors that might impact learning in the classroom environment.

Analyzing the student learners targeted in the instructional design being developed is a means to identify the learner characteristics that will likely impact the process and outcomes of the learning experience.

Factors
Description
Advantage or Constraint
Initial Ideas for Maximizing Negative Factors

Age/Academic Range

16-18 years
-
Plan for the emotional age difference between class members.
Sex Distribution M/F
+

Racial,Ethnic Diversity Caucasian
-
Make certain that the lack of racial diversity does not effect the outcome of the product.
Educational Level 10-12 grade
-
Be aware of the different interests that will appear in the varied grade level.
Disability or Impairment none
+

Developmentally Appropriate Appropriate for age
+

Prerequisite Knowledge Basic computer skills
+

Related Experience None needed
-
Some remediation may be needed for the possible difference in experience.
Perception of Role as Student Willing to learn and follow directions
+

Motivation for Learning Produce a newspaper and annual that they can be proud of
+

Attitude Toward Subject Enthusiastic

+

Expectations from Course Publish the HS Annual and the bi-weekly newspaper
+

Competitiveness Average in most cases

Environment factors that impact learning.

Analyzing the environment is a means to identify the issues that will impact the (a) process of the design and production, (b) implementation, and (c) outcomes of the learning experience.

Design and Production:

Budget Available

N/A +   Everything is already in place so budget is not needed
Materials required Photoshop, example pictures +
Production Equipment Available

Win2000 laptop, digital TV or data projector

+
Time for Design and Production Long term assignments +   This assignment is for learning to edit photos for the school annual and newspaper. It will be used all through the year.
Department of Technology Requirements Technology support only +
Implementation:
Class Size 15   - Not much can be done about the size. Students may have to share computers during the demonstration but assignments can be done independently while others work on other things.
Class Period Length 90 min +
Location rm 226 +
Seating Arrangement traditional classroom   - Not easy to see what students are working on. Might want to setup tables for the explicit use of the laptops so the screens can be viewed from all areas of the room.
Lighting N/A
Temperature N/A
Noise minimal   - During the lunch change, the classroom door will need to be shut.
Equipment 4-Win 2000 laptops, 3 Win98 desktops, digital cameras and scanner +   The 3 Win98 machines really need to be upgraded to 2000, but that can be done later.

Technology Support

none +

Outcome:

State Requirements

Employer Needs
Photos edited for Annual and school Newspaper +
Co-Worker Needs
Instruction in Photoshop +
Student Needs
Learning Photoshop for photo editing +   Learning Photoshop can benefit students in the work place later on.

Content factors that may impact the learning:

Analyzing the content is a means to identify in general terms the topics to be addressed in your lesson and to analyze these topics in terms of the requisite sup-topics, and degree of learning difficulty.

Main Topics Sub-Topics (What Is Involved In Learning Each Main Topic?) Readiness To Learn Degree of Difficulty Possible Instructional Strategies
Capturing pictures from the digital camera

1. Hooking up the camera to the computer

2. Capturing the pictures

3. Saving the pictures in the shared folder

The students have been using the came. Most should be familiar with using network files. This should be relatively easy for most students. The the use of the shared folder may need to be explained in more depth to some. Demonstrate how to do this and then allow each student to it on their own with the teacher watching or a student that has already mastered the concept.
Using the basic editing features of Photoshop

1. Opening a picture in Photoshop from a shared location

2. Edit the photo by cropping, image size, lighting etc..

The learners already know how to open a file in a software package For most students this will be a relatively easy task. I may be confusing at first and may take a couple of tries to get it right. Using a digital TV or data projector show the concepts that need to be mastered. go through several examples and then give them the opportunity to practice while being monitored.
Saving the pictures in the appropriate format for their use

1. The difference between TIFF and JPG

2. How to save in TIFF and JPG

3. When to save in TIFF and JPG

4. Saving into the shared folder

Students already know how to save documents on a disk or hard drive This may be more complicated. Many students will forget to choose their file format and not remember when to use which format and why. Show how to save the pictures and how to place in the shared folder. Explain why they must be saved in this format.
