Lesson Title: Successful Internet searches and development of Newsletter Articles

Subject(s) and Grade Level: Journalism – 9th-12th grades

Standards: MTT

Content TEKS: (Journalism)

Content and Cognitive Goals:

Student Goals:

·        Use the Internet to research news articles to compare writing styles of writers

·        Create their own newsletter articles by learning from other writers

Teacher Goals:

·        To design a lesson that will encourage the students to look at many resources for their ideas

·        Help instruct the teacher in overseeing proper website browsing and searching techniques

·        Help the teacher to feel more comfortable with using the computers, the internet, and ultimately publishing to the web.

Learning Connections:

·        Use basic computer and internet skills

·        Use appropriate searching techniques

·        Be able to identify and compare different writing styles

·        Create a news article that is effective and clearly conveys the idea

Procedures for Learning Activities/Tasks: (Please number each procedure.)

1.      Students use the desktop computers to search the internet for newspaper articles

2.      Students will compare writing styles

3.      Students will copy desired text and paste it into Microsoft Word

4.      Students will edit and format text in Microsoft Word

5.      Students will insert and format pictures in Microsoft Word

Knowledge: The students will have previous knowledge in using the internet and searching

 

Comprehension: The students will have a basic understanding of:

·         Proper searching techniques

·         Copying desired text

·         Pasting text into Microsoft Word

·        Formatting text

 

Application: The students will take the information from the lectures and the demonstrations and discussions and use it to create their own newsletter article.

 

Analysis: The students will be able to compare their writing styles with other writing styles that they have found through their research.  The students will be able to discuss with each other ways to improve their writing.

 

Synthesis: The students will produce a final newsletter article.  They will choose a picture that has been inserted into the article.  The school will publish some of the newsletter articles on the school’s website.

 

Evaluation: The students will use a student-devised rubric and their own discussion and comments to determine if they composed an adequate newsletter article.

 

Assistive and Diverse Learners

My only concern with any of the diverse learners in class is that their needs are met.  In some instances, some of the students may need:
