Instructional and Learning Strategies.

Analyzing the student learners targeted in the instructional design being developed is a means to identify the learner characteristics that will likely impact the process and outcomes of the learning experience.

Aspect 1: The Syntax

To learn how to search for news paper articles on the internet Show by example/demonstration
  1. Open the browser (we have been using Netscape)
  2. Type in the appropriate URL address for the search engine
  3. Type in the text for the subject matter being searched

The student will need to take notes if necessary.

The student will need to ask questions if they do not understand any of the steps.

Active Learning
  1. The students will open their browsers
  2. The students will then commence their searches
  3. The students will guide each other if necessary

The students will repeat the steps shown in the example.

They will watch each other and help each other out if necessary.

Selecting text and copying it to the clipboard Show by example/demonstration
  1. Finde text from a newspaper article, online, that we want to select
  2. Highlight the text with the mouse
  3. Copy the text (using the shortcut keys - Ctrl-C)

The students will follow along with the example.

They will take notes as necessary.

Active Learning
  1. The students will browse for a newspaper article
  2. I will make myself available to answer any questions

The students will follow the steps for selcting and copying as shown in the demonstration

They will help each other or ask the instructor for help

Pasting the selected text in Microsoft Word Show by example/demonstration
  1. Opening Microsoft Word
  2. Pasting the selected text in a new document (using the shortcut keys - Ctrl-V)

The students will follow along with the example.

They will take notes as necessary

They will ask questions if they do not understand.

Active Learing
  1. The students will open Microsoft Word
  2. The students will then paste their selected text

The students will show by pasting their understanding of the activity so far

They will show each other or ask questions if necessary

Formatting the text in Microsoft Word Show by example/demonstration
  1. Changing any of the formats (i.e. fonts, line spacing, headers, adding or deleting text, etc.)
  2. Adding any pictures if desired

 

The students will follow along with the example.

They will ask questions or help each other if necessary

 

Aspect 2: The Social System

Describe the interpersonal structure of the instructional experience.

The students will be working with each other in pairs and sometimes in groups. They will be answering their own questions. Those that they cannot answer, they will seek the instructor's help on.

Aspect 3: The role of the instructor

Describe your general instructional role.

The general instructor's role would be that of demonstration and showing by example. The instructor would then be a monitor as the student's go through their work. The instructor would also answer any questions the students may pose.

Aspect 4: The support system

Describe the types and amount of instructional, technical, and other resource support required for the instruction (e.g., instructional materials, communication capabilities, assistive technologies).

The instructional materials that will be needed will be:
  • My laptop
  • The digital projector
  • The internet
