Learner factors that might impact learning in the classroom environment.

Analyzing the student learners targeted in the instructional design being developed is a means to identify the learner characteristics that will likely impact the process and outcomes of the learning experience.

Factors
Description
Advantage or Constraint
Initial Ideas for Maximizing Negative Factors

Age/Academic Range

15-18 years
-
Make sure that the wide scope of maturity and ability levels does not factor into the dsicussions and evaluations.
Sex Distribution M/F
+

Racial,Ethnic Diversity Caucasian. African American, Hispanic
+

Educational Level 9th - 12th grade
-
Make sure that the different levels are not accentuated as students discuss the lesson objectives.
Disability or Impairment N/A
+

Developmentally Appropriate Appropriate for all ages
+

Prerequisite Knowledge Basic computer and browsing skills
+

Related Experience They need to have some esperience with reading news articles
+

Perception of Role as Student They need to be willing to be open minded to new ideas and to share their thoughts
+

Motivation for Learning Produce a newsletter article that they may see published on the school's website
+

Attitude Toward Subject Open-mindedness and willingness

+

Expectations from Course They will be publishing a school newspaper and eventually the school's yearbook
+

Competitiveness Average in most cases
+

Environment factors that impact learning.

Analyzing the environment is a means to identify the issues that will impact the (a) process of the design and production, (b) implementation, and (c) outcomes of the learning experience.

Factors
Description
Advantage or Constraint
Initial Ideas for Maximizing Negative Factors
Design and Production:

Budget Available

Limited
-
We will use the software and hardware that is in place (even though some of the hardware is 3 - 4 years old)
Materials required Microsoft Word, Photoshop (for any editing of pictures),
+

Production Equipment Available

Compaq desktops, digital cameras, digital projector

+

Time for Design and Production 50 minutes each morning
-
The students may have to come afterschool to meet some of the deadlines
Department of Technology Requirements Software and hardware troubleshooting
-
Since I am the Technology department, my time is limited, but I am always on site and just a room away
Implementation:

Class Size 12
+
-
Because it is a small class, the students will all be able to see their work published.
Class Period Length 50 minutes
-
Not enough time to get major works completed each day, but the students can return when they finish other classwork when needed.
Location computer lab
-
The only computer lab in the school. Other groups sometimes need to use it (not to mention the BCIS classes). Time will sometimes need to be scheduled for work outised of classtime.
Seating Arrangement 2 rows - one with 10, the other with 8 desktops
-
The room is really only designed for 16 computers, but 2 more were squeezed in. It does, however keep the students that are working together from having to be too far apart.
Lighting Flourescent
-
Not enough direct lighting, but it tends to be cooler than direct lighting.
Temperature

Kept at 74

-
Sometimes too warm at the back of the room.
Noise excessive at times
-
With the open conceot school building (built in the early 80's) the other classes tend to get too loud during their discussion times. The computer lab is accessible and easy to monitor from most of the classrooms.
Equipment 15 Compaq desktops, 3 HP desktops, a scanner, digital cameras, card reader, digital projector
+
All of the machines are on Windows XP. All but 3 have 256 MB Ram. The other 3 need to be upgraded (they have only 128 MB Ram)

Technology Support

limited (due to time)
-
I need to have off time to help with any troubleshooting/repairs as needed. My mentee (David) will watch my class if I need to fix or load anything.

Outcome:

State Requirements

Employer Needs
News articles and photos for Newspaper, website and yearbook
+

Co-Worker Needs
Guiding through proper browsing techniques, saving through the network, making webpages
+

Student Needs
Learning through discovery, editing with Microsoft Word, baisc webpage design using Frontpage
+

Content factors that may impact the learning:

Analyzing the content is a means to identify in general terms the topics to be addressed in your lesson and to analyze these topics in terms of the requisite sup-topics, and degree of learning difficulty.

Main Topics Sub-Topics (What Is Involved In Learning Each Main Topic?) Readiness To Learn Degree of Difficulty Possible Instructional Strategies
Browsing the internet for news articles

1. Finding appropriate search engines

2. Saving desired pages to Favorites menu

3. Copying and pasting needed text to Word

Students have already been browsing the internet and have used Microsoft Word The degree of difficulty willnot be very high for most of the students. The only students that will have trouble will be a couple of them that do not have the internet at home and only get to use it at school. Show each student the proper browsing techniques. Have them share their findings. Have the other ones browse to each others findings.
Use the basic editing functions in Microsoft Word

After copying and pasting - moving an formatting text

All of the students have used Microsoft Word for at leat one of their classes. The only students that will have difficulty with this will be the ones that are not familiar with copying and pasting functions. Use the digital projector to show the copying and pasting techniques. Also show them the different choices for fonts and formatting.
Saving the newsletter then opening them with FrontPage

1. Proper saving of files

2. Opening a file using a different program

3. Reformatting, if necessary, for the webpage

The students should already know how to save their documents on the hard drive. The difficulty will come for those students who have never used Frontpage before Show them where to save the newsletter articles. Then, show them how to open up a document from within a program.
