Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Refelection

Digital Graphics/Animation has provided me with an arsenal of tools to create products that have many different uses. Initially, I felt very overwhelmed in having to master new software. I must admit, the wealth of resources provided by my instructors and colleagues truly guided me to a new level of learning. I am now able to incorporate the elements of design, along with principles, in order to create art forms that are pleasing to the eye and that are meaningful to others. My students have benefited so much from my experiences. They too are learning the concepts of design and creating products that allow them to apply design elements. It was truly a milestone to complete this course successffully. I look art forms in a new light. I am informed and able to make decisions about graphic images as a result of my experiences. I plan to enhance my skills by continuing to utilize the resources online and in print to create graphic images and animations. I would like to investigate Animation a great deal more than I have in this particular course since I did focus on Graphics for the most part. It is an area I know that my students are very interested in and that is motivation within itself.

Artifact #9

Descriptors: A digital graphic exhibiting the elements and principles of design within a web page.

Title: The Elements & Principles of Design: A Closer View of the Elements & Principles

Course: Foundations 100

Date Created: August 2002

Source: Individual Project

Media: Adobe GoLive, Paintshop Pro, and Various Internet Resources

Description: A graphic image of an eggplant was created and manipulated to exhibit the elements and principles of design presented in a web-based format.

Rationale: For this project, an image had to be created that represented each of the elements and principles of design. Once the image was created, that same image or series of images had to be manipulated in order to exhibit the elements and principles of design. The composition could have had a separate image for each representation or a composite of the images could have been created to display the elements and principles of design. I decided to use one image and manipulate it in order to provide the different perspectives of that image as visualized through each element and/or principle of design. I felt like this would give the viewer a better understanding of the basic elements and especially the principles of design, if they were able to visualize the same image. I chose an eggplant because I love to cook and I thought it would be interesting to see art through food. I used Paintshop Pro inorder to create the different perspectives of the graphic image. Although, I am a novice at using this software, it gave me a chance to get the feel for the different tools and features. I also decided to create a web page using Adobe GoLive since it could enable my project to be easily accessible. I had very serious reservations about this project because it seemed overwhelming at the start, but in the end I felt like I had a much better understanding of the elements and principles of design due to having gone into the trenches myself and working first hand with the theories on my own.

Implications for future: I really do feel like there is a great deal to be learned and understood by incorporating this project into a technology applications course. It has many variations that could be added for each individual course while providing the learner with hands-on training in an area many technology teachers really fail to delve into and that is art. I look at everything I see now in a different light. I think this would really help students to create better projects. As far as software is concerned, I have a much better grasp on Paintshop Pro and since feel extremely comfotable with Adobe GoLive. I plan to utilize what I have learned to better my future projects and enhance my current curriculum.

Reviewers Comments:
"Very fancy work! Nicely done. At first I thought it was a donut but then I READ like I always tell my students to do and I realized it's an eggplant. What a cool idea!"

Title: Evolution of 2D Animation Report

Course: Digital Graphics

Date Created: October 2002

Source: Individual Essay

Media: MS Word 2000, Adobe Acorbat 5.0

Description: A report detailing the evolution and develoment of an aspect of animation was compiled based on course readings and Internet research. The final report had to be submitted in an acceptable format to provide access to an array of viewers. The report had to include credits and resources as web links. Requirements included explaining how the techniques have changed, major developments and future developments along with the pro's and cons of using the chosen animation type. In addition, a review of at least one animation software program had to be included with the research and a link to a trail download of the software program.

Rationale: I chose to include this report mainly because many times while reading we find things that we are already aware of, but in my case I did not know much of anything about animation. I did realize that adults are never too old to learn about animation because it definitely takes a great deal of our children's time as they hover over the video game units and Disney animated classics. Animation is a billion dollar industry and it akes a great deal of time and effort to create the most minute of animations. Although a tedious job, it seems quite interesting and I nk w that it takes a creative mind to produce.

Implications for future: I think it is important for students to understand how things have evolved over time. It helps to gain perspective on certain topics when you have a working knowledge of a particular subject. I think this is a wonderful introductory activity fro any Digital Graphics/Animation course.

Reviewers Comments: "Interesting report. Well written and inclusive of evolutionary topics. Links are an added +++ especially for other instructors"

Title: Digital Image Capture

Course: Digital Graphics

Date Created: October 2002

Source: Individual Project

Media: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe GoLive, Internet

Description: The instructions for this assignment were very straightforward. One of the topics below had to be selected and researched using personal experienceand readings and/or research. Presentations had to be submitted to the class using creativity in the selection of examples, websites, video clips, summaries, etc.

Topics Included:
-Image File Formats
-How To Capture Images
-File Sizes and How To Reduce Them While Maintaining File Integrity

Rationale: This artifact takes me back to the beginning stages of my learning odessey. As I reviewed my artifacts, this one stood out. I look at where I am today as compared to where I started. I have truly come a long way. Some of the techniques and skills were rough around the edges as anyone can see in this web page. I have had the chance to enhance my web authroing skills and my DTP skills. These were two areas that I needed to polish early on and I have been successful in doing so. I changed a few minor things such as the web page background that I received many nice reviews from, but it need alignment work and I juct decided to change that one element for the good of the overall artifact.

Implications for future: Based on my rationale, this is a project that could be used in any course to teach basic techniques or foundations of a given topic. It can be extended or shaved down a bit to fit varying levels of learners. I would like to change a few cosmetics and use this information in my graphic design curriculum.

Reviewers Comments: "Super work Tanisha!! I liked your design and the content was very informative.
I also loved the camera w/ pictures! Did you create that?"
