Reflection

Web Authoring has given me an toolbox of skills for use in my classroom and in providing an outlet for mass communication within my school. I am able to take what I normally disseminate in a paper format and bring it to life within a web page which is accessible to my students and colleagues. The skills I have obtained from Web Authoring are probably the most valuable to me. I realized during the course of this section that I really enjoy creating web pages. It allows me to explore my creativity in a whole new light. It also allows me to incorporate many of the other skills that I have acquired from other courses. This has given me an opportunity to stay abreast through practice and application. I truly believe if you do not use it, you will lose it. I am very proud of my accomplishments in Web Authoring. This is an area I feel very confident in and would like to get my students to this level. I would like to investigate html coding in depth. This reall helps in troubleshooting, if you are using the various softeare applications and run into problems. It is always good to have a backup when all else fails.

Title: Paradise Travel

Course: Web Authoring 102

Date Created: October 2002

Source: Individual Project

Media: Adobe GoLive, Adobe Photoshop, Paintshop Pro

Description: A ficticious travel agency web page incorporating the various navigational schemes and site elements. For this site, a tropical theme was applied for mood and images were captured and enhanced, using photo editing software, in order to compose a logo for the agency.

Rationale: For this project, a web site had to be created consisting of at least three pages and incorporating such navigational schemes as global, parallel, and local navigation. The site also had to include a storyboard, sitemap, company logo, services provided, maps, office hours, and optimized graphics. After completing the actual site, validation testing had to be completed and reported within the site. I decided to call my travel agency Paradise Travel somply because it seemed like a name that expressed a certain mood..Escape to paradise. This project was evry extensive due to the schemes which had to be incorporated and the links and graphics to be placed within the site. I wanted to provide the "customer" or viewer with an array of options for traveling to the Carribbean. I also wanted utilized rollovers and graphic links to give the site some variety. I must admit, I learned a great deal more about the Carribbean than I knew prior to this activity. I also was able to perfect some of the basic skills of web authoring. My previous knowledge of the elements and principles of design aided in my preparation for building this site. I also had to consider some of the basics of web design such as color schemes because of the fact that I would be dealing with people who would be viewing this site, especially for marketing purposes. Adobe GoLive was my software of choice and it was quite useful for a project such as this. A great deal of the work went into the research for each destination and obtaining the images. In finally testing the site's validity..it went well the first time around, which was a relief! I really gained feedback from my peers and instructor, who gave such positive feedback and advice for improvement.

Implications for future: This was an excellent project for my courses that I am currently teaching. I have a sample to work with and use with my students that I actually created on my own and it is not a part of the generic guides and resources that we are forced to use in our current curriculums. This project is an excellent evaluation tool for students in determing their understanding of web desgn and its basic elements. I would like to incorporate this project with my advanced students and maybe even all of my studenst with some modifications. there are so many options with a project such as this one. My school currently does not have a website in place and I would really like to create one now that I feel confident in knowing the mechanics of web authoring.

Reviewers Comments: "Good work! Very nice layout! Some errors of spacing on the page".

Descriptors: Web Authoring, HTML, Digital Graphics

Title: HTML Presentation

Course: Web Authoring

Date Created: September 2002

Source: Individual Project

Media: Internet, MS Powerpoint 2000

Description: For this assignment, a presentation had to be created on a web authoring topic of your choice from a list provided by the instructor. Research needed to be compiled in order to present a lesson-like presentation to discuss the chosen topic in greater detail. Several readings were provided as resources.

Rationale: My rationale for selecting this particular artifact was simply because it shows just how much I have learned about the mechanics of web authoring. It is great to be able to use the software that automatically generates html for you, but what happens when it doesn't work. One must be able to troubleshoot and by having the skills to decipher html coding will save anyonen time and frustration.

Implications for future: I can see this activity being used as a reinforcement and even as an introductory teaching aid. It is set up in a manner that provides for many uses. Students can create this type of presentation in lieu of notes or other painstaking tasks. It somewhat automates studying.

Reviewers Comments: "Great job! I really liked the clipboard theme. I do have one suggestion, though. In your title of some of the slides (or the main directions area) the closing > is left off of a couple of tags and that may throw off some beginners."
