Video Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection

Video Technology has broadened a vision for me that I never once imagined. The possibilities in this area of technology are endless especially when it comes to incorporating creativeness. Before embarking upon this course, I only knew the basics of operating a video camera which I learned from working within my classroom. The foundation and principles that I have been able to build upon and enhance will allow me the opportunity to prepare my students with the necessary skills to be successful with topics associated with video acquisition, editing, and communicating their information in a universal format. I also have gained a better insight on the proper techniques to be used when working with video. All of these skills can and will be enhanced as I continue to teach and learn.

Course: Video Technology 105

Date Created: March 2003

Description: For this particular project, myself and two other participants worked together via online communication tools in order to create a video which set forth a "mood" based entirely upon our selection of and composition of clips. The basic requirements for the mood video were...

  • A time limit of 1 min.
  • A storyboard or script of the video
  • A mood conveyed
  • At least 3 edited/cut/trimmed scenes from their original clip
  • Sound
  • Credits

In order to complete this project, we had to select, between group members, a web designer, storyboard/script artist, and a editor/producer. Each indvidiual was responsible for the creation and implementation of certain requirements in order to produce a final product. I worked as the editor/producer and was responsible for creating and compiling the actual video for this project. Through this project, we were able to collect and edit video clips and still images along with edited sound clips through the use of various software packages. As a result of teamwork and communication, we created and produced a final video meeting each required that was uploaded to a streaming server to be viewed by the online community of learners.

Rationale: In selecting this artifact, I did not have any reservations. By all means, this project was a success due to the hardwork put forth by each of our group members. The cohesive unit we formed enabled our group to complete this project successfully. Many people are quite skeptical when in comes to working in groups, but this situation was even more difficult because we had no face to face interaction. This definitely made one thing clear to me and that was how powerful online learning can be in any given situation. Although are teaching situations and schedules were quite different, we set reachable goals and were right on target. We did this eventhough each participant's skill level was different. We were able to build upon each other's strengths. This is a concept that I would like to instill in my students. In the real world, personal differences and/or skill level are not as important as working as a unit to reach a goal or complete a project. By communicating and completing tasks through organized units, any project can be successful.

Implications for Future: I think that this is an excellent introductory project for video technology. I also know that it sets forth real world application. I would like to work with my students in completing a similar project, but what I would really like to do is work with our journalism class. This is an excellent tool to incoporate while teaching students about many journalism topics.

Reviewers Comments: "It seems like your team really came together . I like the theme and can tell that you all put forth great effort on this one! Good work!"
