Standards II

Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Reflection on this Standard:
I have been introduced to countless new soures of electronic information through the various TATC courses. The courses have provided a vast wealth of different types of sources on each TA area that have been very helpful but I believe that some of the most helpful sources have come from the resource sharing discussions throughout the program. The participants have shared those resources that are valuable to them - and from these, I have found some new favorite sources that I now use regularly. In these same discussions, the evaluation of resources has helped me learn to be a much more effective judge of electronic sources as well.

Description:
This lesson plan integrated a wide variety of internet resources, including digital media resources, online encyclopedias, online source documents, and other online resource databases. The lesson plan represents the synthesis of information from all of these resources and demonstrates a method that those resources can form the foundation of a classroom lesson.

Rationale:
I chose to include this project to demonstrate this standard because it involved such a wide variety of electronic resources, search strategies, and information evaluation. I also chose it because it demonstrates how a teacher might use those strategies to plan a classroom lesson or how a teacher might guide a student in their own research.

Implications for future:
Creating this lesson plan really made me think about how teachers use the Internet as a resource and how important it is to critically evaluate the information found in online sources. While there is a plethora of quality information on the Internet, there are also many "less than factual" sources as well and it is essential that teachers learn to differentiate between them - and to teach their students to do the same. In the future, I intend to include this concept in my workshops for as many audiences as possible.

Reviewers Comments:
Excellent lesson and a great use of our media resources - this would be a great model for workshops in many different areas and topics.
