Multimedia

The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection:

Multimedia development is a combination of every skill taught within the Technology Applications realm. It is the most difficult and most fun of any portion of this curriculum.

However, it is not always used appropriately. As a Technology Applications teacher, one of my most important goals is to teach the "proper tool at the proper time for the proper task".

  • When is delivery through multimedia appropriate?
  • What are the guiding principles for determining appropriateness?
  • What constraints exist that would make multimedia inappropriate? Physical? Technological? Mental?
  • How do the principles learned in other areas of Technology Applications, such as layout, design, and learning principles, affect the presentation?

All of these questions must be considered when performing this type of development.

The promise of multimedia is its ability to simultaneously address multiple learning and information assimilation styles. Kinetic, aural, and visual orientations are all present and can be used to provide a learning/assimilating thread. By emphasizing the best of each portion of the Technology Applications spectrum in a single component, a manageable and effective presentation can be created.

TATC 103-1: Multimedia Week 4 - Represent Design

Date Created:

05/11/2003

Source:

Extensive use of pre-existing media and images from HBO's Six Feet Under site (http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder/)

Media:

Web delivery using rollover buttons (Macromedia Fireworks), modified images (Adobe Photoshop), HTML (Macromedia Dreamweaver), and edited audio and video (Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge Visual Studio).

Description:

The assignment:
Create an entire multimedia product based on chosen movie/TV show. Target a specific audience for your movie/TV show. Present information about the movie/TV show and persuading us to watch it. Ensure audience appropriateness. You may present your product to us in any format that you wish.
Criteria

  • Set up a storyboard and link it to the presentation
  • Timeline or sketch you're planning and link it to the presentation
  • Integrate your edited sound into your presentation referenced in above discussion
  • Integrate a video clip into your presentation - Does not have to be self-created but can be a previously developed video clip from another source
  • Link to a site that is related to your show
  • Make your content persuasive in nature
  • Give yourself credit in the presentation
  • Include credits to sites or graphics
  • Summarize your target audience

Rationale:

The presentation is a web page, focused on presenting the characters of the show in an easy-to-use format. Because of the show's content (death, dying, and conflict during life), plots are centered around conflict and variations of character involvement. This site serves as a simple reference for where the characters start out, rather than having to discover the depth of the characters through continually watching it....more like a reference to soap opera characters.

It uses neutral colors, primarily grey and black. Since the underlying theme of the show is death, these colors seemed appropriate for Western audiences. It is a frameset, with the left navigation bar composed of three level, rollover images created with Macromedia Fireworks. The embedded video and audio were edited using Sound Forge Visual Studio from Sonic Foundry, exported to RealAudio formats to minimize bandwidth usage and storage space. All images were taken from the HBO site, edited to conform to a standard size. The written content was created based on my impressions and understanding of the characters.

As many interactive features as possible were integrated into the site, with the user having complete control over the audio (which starts automatically on page load), and video playback. Also, the roll overs alternate between black marble, blue marble, and solid black to indicate off, mouse over, and selected states.

This assignment caused me to refine my skills at minimizing multimedia elements to obtain an acceptable balance between quality and delivery. In the past, the sound, video, or multimedia element was the entire FOCUS and size was not a limiting factor - the user was aware of why they were there and wanted to wait for high-quality content. In this case, the multimedia elements are in support of the text and needed to be small to reduce distractions while reading (no flashing pages or loading bars to wait for interminably).

Also, as a solid enemy of framesets, this project gave me a chance to experiment more with this type of web page and integrate it into a delivery format that was usable and consistent.

Implications for Future:

Sound Forge Visual Studio is an excellent package for creating small presentations. I was in love with MGI Videowave, but have found that it is more oriented towards high quality presentations; delivery is a secondary consideration. Sound Forge, on the other hand, has the smallest delivery size as the defaults throughout the program. To increase the size of an exported element is a conscious decision.

Also, I learned how to handle framesets within Adobe GoLive and Macromedia Dreamweaver and have a better understanding of how this can be taught to beginner HTML users.

Reviewers Comments:

Your web page is very nicely done and the character shorts certainly persuaded me that the show was different and (probably) interesting. I don't have HBO though. This sounds like one of those shows that you really have to get "hooked" on to understand what is going on. I don't have time for that type of show right now with TATC, but I enjoyed your web site. Nice work, as always.

Web Delivery with Shockwave Animation

Description:

The assignment:
Animation Requirements

  • Create an animation of your favorite song or poem (Keep the animation between 20 secs - 1 min)
  • Use graphics (either original or previously created by someone besides yourself) in your animation
  • Use repetition of color, shape, texture, spatial relationships, line thickness and size to strengthen the unity of the entire animation
  • Use sound in your animation (optional)
  • Use text in your animation
  • Use the Elements and Principles of Design to help you create your animation

Put the animation on a web page and:

  • Put your name at the top of the page.
  • Give a brief summary of the animation.
  • Give a summary of how you brought unity to the entire project.
  • Create a link in the form of a .doc or web page featuring your content from your activity in Discussion 3 Module 2.

Rationale:

I included this piece because I had to create it entirely from scratch. I read the poem, found the images, made modifications as needed, and combined the animation into a whole. Also, the piece was a cross-discipline creation, which is one of the most powerful uses of technology in education. Most companies and publishers focus on the use of technology for technology's sake, not necessarily to the creation of a better teaching tool within a specific subject. Ozymandias was built to prove that a better understanding of a poem and its mood could be delivered using a technology tool, but without the total subjugation of the poem.

Implications for Future:

I would like to create more elements like this one that enhance the basic value in a learning element by using technology.

Reviewers Comments:

I knew I could find something different and worthwhile when I went to your site. I did not know this poem. I liked the closeup of the pharaoh especially, and how the sphinx disappeared. The colors were appropriate. Who did the narration? You??
What program did you use? I must try one of these slide-show style presentations as well.
Good work all around.

Media:

Web Delivery of Shockwave Presentation, followed by static web page containing an interactive Flash component with a scrolling frame and an embedded video. Large size, but serviceable for Intranet delivery.

Description:

The Assignment:
Using your animation software, create an introduction for your photo album theme. This introduction will be the first thing that we will see when we go to your site.
You may use any type of introduction that you would like to. It can be just text or pictures/graphics and text.
You are going to create a photo album of your life. It can combine family, work, a collection of various pictures or just a hobby that you like. You will have a minimum of two pages, which will consist of an introduction (splash) animation page and the web page with all of the other required criteria. The photo album will be unlike any that you have never created before. It will be an Interactive Internet Photo Album for all to see.

Photo Album Criteria:

  • Between 5-10 pictures that are a combination of vector and/or bitmapped graphics - as you are selecting, think about which is better to use and what are the differences
  • Pictures edited in some aspect (optional). Let us know if you edit a picture
  • A title for the photo album
  • Your photo album created using presentation software (online presentation services not permitted)

Interactive Internet Photo Album Criteria:

  • Introduction (splash) animation page Page one. to be created in Module 2.
  • Create a web site that will house all of the elements listed below. You may add the elements to one page or to several pages. It is your choice as long as all of the elements are visible. Page two or more.
  • Input a video into your final production, if you can find a video for your theme that would be great. You do not have to edit your video in anyway. We will simply put it on our page. You can either embed the video or link to it. If you link, place a thumbnail of the video for the link.
  • Summarize the following concerning the photo album:
    • Brief description of pictures
    • Summary of bitmapped and/or vector graphics
    • Place a link to or embed the presentation photo album. If you link, place a thumbnail of the presentation for the link
    • Credits Page/Section
    • Add any extra features that you think will enhance your web page such as animated bullets, java scripting, mouse tracers, etc. (optional)

Rationale:

Best Work: The opening slash page, the soccer ball, is the closest to real-life emotion that I have come with an animation. It interacts with its surroundings and catches our attention with its personality and "nervous" behavior.

This piece was the most complex that I had ever created. Embedded video is a new feature of Flash MX and the Flash 6 Player; this type of activity previously required that the "movie" be rendered as a movie clip within Flash, reducing control and bit depth of the movie considerably. Each of the pictures was either downloaded from the Internet or scanned in at 1200 dpi, then modified to fit into the Flash presentation. The movie was an interesting download from the an English Soccer site. The soundtrack was edited from 2 "stand" songs sung by British soccer fans. The quality is relatively poor, but what do you expect from a bunch of drunk Englishmen?

Implications for Future:

While the newer features of the Flash MX environment are fun to play with, this assignment showed me some of the difficulties that can be encountered and should be avoided. There are many uses for scrolling frames and video within a Flash animation; most students will have seen examples of this with the older versions of Flash. The new version reduces the amount of development time needed to create these animations, but, because of their high software requirements, increases the danger that no one will have the hardware to see it.

For image creation and development, this was excellent practice on scanning, shaping, and resizing. Tedious, but a requirement for getting better at it.

Reviewers Comments:

Loved the soccer ball! My favorite such "friend" is Wilson from "Cast Away" (Volleyball has been my life for several years now - my daughters, now my soon-to-be-son-in-law) This gives me an idea!!! Might pursue this in the future.
Great job!
