Multimedia

The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Multimedia integrates all of the TA courses and turned out to be my favorite of all the TA courses.  In this course I learned how to create videos, edit sound, used graphics, present multimedia products through web pages, and use my Desktop Publishing skills. I learned to work as a group member to create a team video.  I think this will help me when I make group work assignments for my classes.

I can see so many uses for Multimedia; creating resource materials, teaching aides, workshops, displaying student's work on the web or at Open House to name a few. I think this will be one of the application courses that I will enjoy teaching and will use the new skills I have learned very often.Best Work

Title: Discussion 4: Interactive Internet Photo Album

Course: 103-A Multimedia: Module 2-Multimedia Components (Animation, Graphics, and Video)

Date Created: February 24, 2003

Source: Course Instructions from Modules 1 & 2

Media: Power Point, Live Motion, Front Page 2002, Scanner, Digital Camera, Photographs, Clip Art, Animated Gifs

Description:  We were to create an interactive, Internet photo album of our lives or a hobby. The requirements were:

bulletCreate in a presentation software and housed in a web site.
bulletThe web site could have a minimum of two pages with the first page being a splash (animation) page and the second being a web page with all the other required criteria.
bulletThe web site also had to include an input of a video with link, brief description of the pictures in the photo album, summary of bitmapped/vector images, credits page/section, and any extra features to enhance the web pages (optional).
bulletThe photo album had to include between 5-10 pictures, edited pictures (optional), a title for the photo album, album created using presentation software.
bulletThis was a product descriptor assignment also.

I created an introductory splash page with a link to the photo album. I created the album in PowerPoint with the required number of photographs, saved the PowerPoint in PowerPoint Show, PowerPoint Presentation, and as a PDF file.  I created the required documentation for the brief description of the pictures in a table format for easier viewing on a web page. I created a credits page, a summary of the bitmapped/vector images and added sound and automation to the slide shows as extra features to enhance the web pages.  I also included extra navigational options that I learned in the Web Mastery course. I included a video link to the movie "Father of the Bride" to fulfill the video link requirement.

Rationale:  This artifact is included because this assignment pulled together many of the areas of Technology Applications that we have studied so far as well as giving us a glimpse at the upcoming Video Technology Module.  In completing this assignment we used terminology and honed skills previously learned in Web Mastery, Desktop Publishing, Digital Graphics/Animation, and learned new terminology and skills for Multimedia. I choose to make the photo album of my family using photographs from professional photographers, 35 MM pictures and digital pictures I had taken.  Through the editing, file compression, and working with the photos I think I have gained a better understanding of bitmapped/vector graphics.  I think that the presentation will be a good bench mark to gage improvement because it is one of the first real multimedia projects I have tried.

Implications for future: I can see using a project like this with students in a multimedia class to review TA skills learned from earlier courses and as an introduction to multimedia.  As with our group it would give the teacher a feel for what the students know and where some weak areas might be that need to be worked on before diving into the course.  I am also going to try and enlarge the album and burn it to a CD for my kids for a keepsake.

Reviewers Comments:

I really liked how you have your web page designed.  The background for the pictures was beautiful, and you always show a sense of humor in your projects!  Nice job!

You've done a great job.  Didn't get to look at everything but will try to later.  Everything is organized and easy to read.

Title: Discussion 2: Movie Integration

Course: 103 A Multimedia: Module 4- Project Integration

Date Created: March 2003

Source: Course Instructions Modules 3 & 4

Media: PowerPoint, MGI VideoWave 5, Photo Shop, Real Player, Windows Media Player, Cool Edit, Front Page 2002, Inspiration

Description:  After choosing a favorite movie or TV show and creating sound/music from that show in Discussion 1, Module 4,  we were to create a multimedia project around that show for our culminating project for the Multimedia Module .  The show I chose was the TV series Stargate SG-1.  We were to target a specific audience and persuade the audience to watch the show.  Our product had to be appropriate for the audience and we had to 'sell' it to the audience.  We could present the multimedia project in any format that we wanted to.  The project had to include the following criteria:
bulletStoryboard
bulletTimeline
bulletIntegrate our previously edited sound
bulletIntegrate a video clip
bulletContent persuasive in nature
bulletInclude credits
bulletSummarize target audience
bulletGive credit to yourself for presentation

I created a web site to present my project.  I created an introductory flash for my first web page.  This page contained the links to the other web pages on the web site.  This project was targeted at the young adult and older audience. I created an automated PowerPoint presentation as my main "persuasion" feature, as well as a short video with music and sound to feature the characters of Stargate SG-1.  I included a link to a video clip taken from the Stargate SG-1 television show.  I used a picture of the Stargate and cast as the unifying background for my web site, storyboard, timeline, credits page, and PowerPoint.

Rationale: I chose to use this project as an artifact and as an example of my Best Work because this project was a culmination of all we have learned not only in multimedia, but because it also incorporated many of the things we have learned in the previous TA courses we have completed.  I presented it in web page format in Front Page with a PowerPoint presentation inserted and the file compressed.  I reduced the size of the photographs in Photo Shop and compressed the files. I created a short video clip with the edited sound synchronized with the clip.  I created the storyboard and timeline with Inspiration software and saved them as transparent gifs.

Implications for future: I think a project like this could be used several times during a multimedia course.  I think it would be good to have the students prepare a project like this at the end of each semester and then compare the two to see the progress the students had made.  I think something similar to this would be good for teachers to use to present curriculum material to their classes.  Because of the time constraints it would be hard to do too many, but even by adding a few each year just think of the teaching resource that would be available to them and the interest it could have for the students.  I know that unless the teachers have had some training, this would be an impossible task and most will not take the time to do this.

Reviewers Comments: I don't know what you mean by attempt. This is a great presentation. Your backgrounds on the pages are a great addition. I enjoyed the slide show and even though I like the show, I learned some new things from your information. I hope I can learn to create pages as good as you have done. I know it takes a long time to do that and it seems there just isn't enough time in a day for me to get things finished.

Reviewers Comments: Oh WOW! LOVE the background.  You put in a lot of work on your storyboard.  It is detailed enough that students could follow it in class.  All of your links worked.  Your pages are consistent and easy to navigate.  I like the way you described the different parts of the show.  I've never seen it, but your review makes me want to.
