Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Digital Graphics and Animations was one of the more challenging areas of study for me because I have not had any experience in this area.  I feel that I now have a good basic working knowledge of the subject. I learned so much from observing the work of my classmates and the discussions we participated in during the module.  I was introduced to an animation program called SWISH and created a short animation 'movie' and I learned to use Photoshop and worked with LiveMotion. I have since introduced PhotoShop and Swish to some of my classes and my students and I have enjoyed creating animated graphics and working with digital graphics in class.

My goals for the future are to continue to increase my knowledge and skills in digital graphics/animation and become more at ease using the technology and software associated with digital graphics/animations.

Title: Discussion 1: Representing Design

Course:100 Foundation: Module 4-Applying the Elements & Principles of Design as a Communication Tool

Date Created: August 27, 2002

Source: Graphic of a black and white line drawing of a unicorn from www.tcady.com/clipart/clipart5

Media: Clipart of a unicorn transformed through the use of Photoshop, Publisher, Illustrator, and Paint displayed as a Web Page using FrontPage

Description: This is a web page which demonstrates the principles and elements of design with short definitions for each principle or element demonstrated. The requirements for the Elements and Principles of Design Project were:

bulletSelect/draw a graphic and transform it to demonstrate the different principles and elements of design
bulletSubmit the finished product as a web page, rtf or pdf file.

I chose to present it as a web page.  After selecting the graphic, I found myself using several different pieces of software to create the effects that I wanted.  I had never used Photoshop and was not comfortable enough with the software to create the entire project in Photoshop.  I did learn to use parts of Photoshop which in turn made me use Illustrator with Photoshop, so I became familiar with some of the processes in both of these programs.

Rationale

I was not familiar with the terminology or the definitions of elements and principles of design. This project along with the rule of thirds has made me more aware of these elements and designs.  I included the definitions with the graphic more for my benefit than anything else because I wanted to be able to use this for a reference later on.

I have included this project because it meets the requirements of the assignment in illustrating elements and principles of design and because it shows that it integrates with other areas of Technology Applications such as Web Mastery. This is clearly a beginners attempt at digital graphics.  It will be a benchmark that I can compare against future work. It also shows me that I need to practice and polishing my skills using different kinds of software so that I can produce the kind of final/end  products that I want.

Implications for future: I think that this project will make an excellent assignment for students to show their understanding of the concepts of the Elements & Principles of Design.  It is a project that can be taught and used in any of the TA courses because the concepts are used in all TA courses.

Reviewers Comments: Well done, Sheryl.  Clear, simple definitions with awesome illustrations made this easy to follow.

Title: Discussion 2: Putting It All Together Final Unit Lesson

Course: 101 Digital Graphics: Module 4-Publishing and Putting It All Together

Date Created: November 4, 2002

Source: Module requirements

Media: Front Page 2002, PowerPoint, Swish, LiveMotion, MS Publisher, MS Word, Adobe 5.0, Photo Shop

Description: This was the final project for Digital Graphics. We were to include the following attributes:
bulletHome Page for site
bulletAnimation on home page
bulletVocabulary
bulletSample of Finished Product
bulletLecture Notes/Handouts downloadable in a universally assessable format
bulletStep-by-Step Instructions
bulletCredits Page
bulletLinked pages
bulletPost Link
bulletRespond to peers with critiques and praise

Rationale: I choose to use this as a artifact because it was a complete lesson plan that could be used in the classroom and it put all the components that we have worked on in digital graphics together in one project.  It also combined web mastery and some desktop publishing which we will have in a future module.  I choose to present the Step-by-Step as a Power Point presentation because I thought I could use it for TA classes that I will teach next year.  I have found that the students and substitute teachers can have access to this type of resource when I put it on our network even if I am not there.

Implications for future:  I will use this unit lesson when I teach the Digital Graphics TA course next year.  It will be a definite plus to have something this in depth to use already at hand as well as the lessons of my peers.  Such a great resource!

Reviewers Comments: Great job Sheryl!  Your slide show made the instructions very clear.  I liked your reminder to save the master as a tiff and save pdf and jpeg for other uses.  I never thought of the tiff on mine. I also liked the different options for the different ways to present the end product for a more in-depth assignment.
