Desktop Publishing

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Desktop Publishing is one of the most widely used applications by teachers.  We create handouts, memos, flyers, letters to parents, instruction sheets, etc. on a daily basis. I thought that this would be one of the easier courses, but found out there is so much more to creating publications than just typing up something and printing it out.  Through the DTP and Extended DTP courses I have now learned to look at DTP in a whole new way.  I have found so many "Joshua Trees" after reading Robin William's "Non Designer's Design Book"!  The Readings, Interactive Guides, and Internet sites that have been suggested by the course and class members have been a great resource for me.  I have also found and bookmarked so many others that I can use as resources in the future.

I feel that I now have a sound background on which to build a DTP course.  I want to continue to build on this background and fill in the weak areas.  I hope to use some of the publications that we made in our courses and will use many of the lessons and ideas that were presented by other members in my class with my students.Best Work

Title: Discussion 2: Greeting Card

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing: Module 2-Designs and Typography Considerations

Date Created: January 18, 2003

Source: Module 104 Instructions, Individual Project

Media: Microsoft Publisher 2000, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Acrobat

Description:  For this project we were to create a greeting card. The requirements were:

bulletCreate our own card
bulletPost the card to the discussion site
bulletComplete step-by-step online lessons which introduced us to some of the elements of desktop publishing design
bulletAsk our mentor to overview the project

The card I choose to do was a Thank You card for my grandson to send to people who supported him during the stock shows this year. I choose to create the Thank You card in the Top Tent fold because I needed more room to display the pictures. This card would be printed on both sides of one sheet of paper. I used PhotoShop to edit the pictures.  I created the original card in Microsoft Publisher, used the color print option CMYK, and then converted the Publisher document into a PageMaker document by using the file converter in PageMaker.  I did some additional editing in PageMaker and then created a .pdf file with the screen option in order to display it on a monitor.

Rationale:  This project was to introduce the class to Desktop Publishing.  After completing the suggested on-line lessons, the learner would be familiar with some of the elements of design in desktop publishing. I included this project because the TEKS covered many of the Desktop Publishing requirements.  I had to use the elements & principles of design, layout, typography, Digital Graphics, solve program compatibility problems, address file size/compression, communicate with my peers about the project, and present the project in a universally usable file.

Implications for future: This project was a fun project to do and I can see using it with my classes as well as personal use.  The online step-by-step instructions should be a good tool to use with the classes also.  It provides a good introduction to desktop publishing with a fun and creative product as a result.

Reviewers CommentsSheryl, Great job.  Loved the pictures.  Very neat, clean, easy to read.  Used rule of thirds.  Chris is lucky to have a grandmother who can make things for him.

Title: Discussion 2: Class Information Publication

Course: 204 Extended Desktop Publishing:  Module 4-Production and Assessments

Date Created: May 15, 2003

Source: Independent Project with Group Work on the Links Section

Media: Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Acrobat 5.0, Adobe Photoshop

Description: The Class Information Publication was to be created with the intention of being able to use it as an informational handout about our Desktop Publishing Class to give to students, parents, and the administration. I chose to present my publication in a booklet form. We were to apply all the previously explored concepts of developing a DTP document learned in the 104 Desktop Publishing Modules as well as concepts learned in the Extended DTP Modules. At the beginning of the Extended Desktop Publishing Course we were to think of sections to put in a Class Information Publication. Through out the four modules we were assigned different sections that would be incorporated into the final publication. The requirements and sections were:
bulletCover Page with graphic
bulletTable of Contents section
bulletCourse Outline
bulletCourse Scope/Sequence
bulletCourse Calendar
bulletLinks Section
bulletAt least one additional section

Another part of the project was to work as a team with three other people to create a links section for the Class Information Publication. Each team member assumed one of the roles below and the role of researcher. I was one of the writers.
bulletResearcher: Each member of the group was to find at least three links, summarize the site, and send the information to the Writers.
bulletProject Manager: Each member reported to the Project Manager with a summary of our task and how we felt about the task at the end of the project
bulletLead Programmer: Designed the layout and applied the content sent from the Writers for the links section
bulletWriters:  Collected the resource links from each group member and compiled them including referenced credit to the member, composed an introductory paragraph, and passed the file on to the Lead Programmer

Rationale:  This artifact is included because I think it represents the progress I have made in the DTP course.  I am also including it as a Best Work example because it incorporates all I have learned in the area of Desktop Publishing.  This assignment required me to carefully plan the content and presentation, apply the principles and elements of design, include the concepts learned in the Non-Designers Design Book, use research skills, and work as a team member.

Implications for future: I have already refined this publication even more and plan on presenting it to my administration as well as students and parents next year.  I am also in the process of developing similar booklets for my other classes.  I plan on posting the publications on my class web pages and keeping an updated calendar with class assignments also.  I would like to see my students eventually create similar publications for other teachers and keep the class publication updated.

Reviewers Comments: Good planning with going with black and white or color.  You also were very smart to make it in a larger print version.  I like the color layout and white space.  I thought you did a great job deciding what info needed to be in the document and what was just for your planning.
