Task Appropriate Tools in Problem-Solving
Use task-appropriate tools to synthesize knowledge, create and modify solutions, and evaluate results in a way that supports the work of individuals and groups in problem-solving situations.
I have done group work in the Foundation ,
Multimedia , Video Technology , and the Extended
Desktop Publishing Courses as well as individual
work in all of the courses. Throughout the
Technology Application courses I have gained
skills that help me create and modify products,
find problems and find solutions to fix the
problems, evaluate my products and the products
of others in a way that supports individuals and
groups. The new skills I have learned plus the
ones I have fine tuned will help me teach my
students ways to work in a group environment as
well as how to support the work of groups and
individuals in problem solving situations.

Title: Discussion 1: Sound Editing
Software
Course: 103-A Multimedia: Module 4-Project
Integration
Date Created: March 4, 2003
Source: Class discussion, Individual
report
Media: Internet, Microsoft Word, Adobe
Acrobat 5.0, Cool Edit 2000
Description: This discussion had two
parts. In the first part of the discussion we
were to review a sound editing piece of software
to use to edit sound files and share the review
and evaluation of the software with our
classmates. Then we were to review our
classmates summaries of their sound editing
software and respond to their postings.
In the second part we were to use the software
we reviewed to edit two sounds files together
into one sound file.
In part one we had to choose a sound editing
piece of software from the 103 Software review
sight by signing up by the software we choose to
review. Only four people could review a
single piece of software. The report was
to be based on the following criteria:
 | Name of the software |
 | Approximate price |
 | Location or web site to see
the software |
 | Brief review on that
software |
 | Ease of use |
 | Feasibility |
 | Features of the software |
 | Editing capabilities |
 | File inputs available |
 | File outputs available |
 | Opinion on the software
Likes/dislikes |
Part two requirements were:
 | Choose two sound files |
 | Theme to a movie or a TV
show |
 | Additional sound either
from the show or a self-created sound |
 | Edit sounds in a way that
you may incorporate them into one sound file
for your Movie Integration project |
 | Add any effect you like or
simply combine the two sounds |
 | Compose a discussion on how
you achieved your sound |
 | Describe the sounds and
your anticipated uses |
 | Attach the sound to your
discussion |
 | Post response to
"Manipulation" area |
 | Respond to peers on their
edited sound |
To create the report I first had to find the
web site for Cool Edit 2000, find reviews of the
software, and find the other information
required in part one of the discussion. I
then downloaded a trial copy of the software to
use. After experimenting with the software
and using it to create my sound file in part
two, I gave my opinion of the software in my
report. In part two I went to the Internet to
find sound files for my TV series "Stargate
SG-1" that I had chosen to create my multimedia
Movie Integration project on. I selected
the songs that are played at the beginning and
of the show and some wav files of the actors
speaking to merge together into one file.
I used Cool Edit 2000 to edit the sound files
and create the single file required. I
then reviewed the reports on other sound editing
software that my classmates described, commented
on some, and listened to the sound files they
had created. I posted my report in a variety of
formats, rtf, pdf, doc,
Rationale: By
reviewing, evaluating, and demonstrating the
outcome of combining two or more sound files,
and sharing this information with my classmates,
this artifact demonstrates the use of task-appropriate tools to synthesize knowledge, create and modify solutions, and evaluate results in a way that supports the work of individuals and groups in problem-solving situations.
Implications for future: This type of
project could be used to by the students to
demonstrate their sound editing skills as well
as their understanding of how to share solutions
learned, and evaluate products. This could
be used as an individual project or as a group
project with my classes.
Reviewers Comments:
Your sound file is
super! Where did you find the Stargate
theme song and cast talking? (My husband is a
fan) I think I am going to look into Cool
Edit a little more, I have the demo, and need
software that is relatively easy to use by
covers many editing options. Great job on
your review too!!
