Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Throughout the studies of the different Technology Application courses this standard has been constantly in use.  I have found new search strategies, resources, and ways to evaluate the material found.  There are many reliable sources on the Internet but the students need to be taught how to validate the information. Students must be able to acquire, analyze, and evaluate websites and electronic information for accuracy.

Artifact #11

Descriptors: Audio file types, Internet Research, Comparison, Audio Input/Output

Title: Discussion 1: Sound File Formats

Course: 103 Multimedia: Module 3-Sound Editing

Date Created: March1, 2003

Source: Individual discussions on sound file formats

Media: Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat 5.0, Internet

Description: In this class discussion we were to look at file types and audio input/output. The requirements were:
bulletSelect one audio file type
bulletFind one thing about that file type that was not mentioned in the Interactive Guide about sound file types
bulletPost your discovery

We were to include such things as:
bulletHow do you know which audio format to use?
bulletIs one format better than the other in certain situations?
bulletAre there known problems with certain types of audio file types?

Rationale: Through the Interactive Guides and Readings I learned about the different types of sound files.  Through my research over the Internet I found many great resources to use for my discussion as well as my classroom. I used this information to fulfill the requirements of the assignment and in the process demonstrated my ability to identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information. This artifact was included to demonstrate my ability to use research skills, identify task requirements, and use current technology to acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Implications for future: There is a vast array of information available to the student on the Internet, such as forums, tutorials, on-line classes, informational sites, databases, etc., to name a few, as well as help files in software programs.  Students will need to be able to effectively search for the required information, analyze and evaluate the information they acquire.  This type of project or discussion would help hone their skills, share their findings with their peers, and broaden their knowledge base and be a good project to use for any of the TA courses.

Reviewers Comments: Lots of good information here.  I especially liked your comparison of MIDI to vector.
