Web Mastering

The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Although I had created several web pages in the past, I knew I still had much to learn about creating web pages.  Before taking this course I had not had any training on the correct way to create a web page/site. I enjoyed the creative process of starting a web site from scratch, learning the different aspects of creating a good web site and seeing it through to the final product.

My goals for the future include learning techniques that will improve my ability to create effective web sites and to teach students to create web sites using correct standards, incorporate animation and graphics, user friendly navigation techniques, file compression, cross-platform issues, and apply the principles and elements of design to the web pages.

Course: 102 Web Mastery: Module 3-Evaluating Web Sites

Date Created: September 29, 2002

Source: Module instructions

Media:  Web Page, FrontPage XP, Graphics Workshop, Photoshop, Inspiration

Description: For this artifact we were to develop a simple web site of at least three pages for a travel company about one or more of their most traveled destinations.  The website had to include:

bulletThe navigational schemes of 'bread crumbs', global navigation, parallel navigation, and local navigation.
bulletA tone for the site such serious corporate, cartoon, kids, community oriented or trendy/contemporary.
bulletStoryboard
bulletHome Page
bulletCompany services provided
bulletMap/s
bulletOffice hours
bulletLinks to appropriate external sites
bulletA site map
bulletTravel company logo
bulletPhotos with graphic files optimized
bulletAt least three pages
bulletResults of one of the testing items performed on one page of the site
bulletExtra HTML navigational features credit for rollover buttons and flash file

I choose 'serious corporate' as the theme of the site. I created a logo consisting of a red sunset with the company name 'Far Horizons' written in the sky. I searched through several free photograph sites and found pictures of various vacation sites to add to the web site.  We were required to include maps so I found one of Texas and marked the spot that the company business was located. We had to create a storyboard and I used Inspiration to make mine.  I created a web site that had six web pages, plus two documentation pages that met the requirements of this activity.  The pages included a home page, company services provided, office hours, external and internal links, and a site map. At least one page of the web site was tested for cross platform issues.

Rationale:  Through the creation of the major project and the different activities of the web mastery modules, I learned how cross platform formats are a concern, how some knowledge of HTML can help you tweak your site, and how the use of the different types of navigation make traveling through a web site much easier.  I learned about elements of web design, the importance of compressing graphic images and web security issues.  One of the main goals that I wanted to achieve in this project was to get a basic background of correct web construction and an awareness of web design. I believe that this goal was accomplished as the artifact will show.  Now I want to take this basic knowledge and continue to build upon it and increase my skills at web mastery.

Implications for future:  This course helped me be aware several important issues to teach in my future web classes. It also taught me the value of breaking down the big project into smaller sections so the process is not overwhelming to the student.  I am the webmaster for our school web site and one of my future goals is to use the knowledge I have gained from this course and improve the web site.  My daughter has asked me to help build a web site and logo for the company she is fixing to start, so I can see challenges ahead that this course will help me with besides the education aspects.

Reviewers Comments: You did a beautiful job of designing your web site.  I especially like the crisp images and simple color schemes that you chose.  They enhance you site to make it look very appealing and easy to understand and navigate. Great Job!

Title: Discussion 1: Evaluating a Site for Content and Functionality

Course: 102 Web Mastery: Module 3-Evaluating Web Sites

Date Created: September 21, 2002

Source: Module Instructions

Media: Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat

Description: In this activity we were to select a topic of interest and locate several web sites related to that topic.  Then we were to use the list of questions from the Interactive Guides 1-3 and 2-3 to evaluate the information in the sites for their content and functionality. We were to provide a link to one site that would be evaluated as reliable and to one site that was evaluated as unreliable.  We were to evaluate for functionality, navigational scheme used and read the evaluations posted from our classmates.
Some of the things we were to look for were:
bulletDownload time
bulletAny broken links
bulletDate site created
bulletDate site updated
bulletAlt text used for images
bulletSite information current
bulletSite sponsored
bulletAuthor gain from site
bulletMultimedia
bulletText matching message
bulletSpelling/grammar errors
bulletNavigational ease

Rationale: I included this artifact as a representation of my ability to evaluate a web site for it's functionality and reliability.  This is a distinction that students as well as adults need to be able to make when accessing web sites for research, information, or entertainment.  As we all know anyone can put anything up on a web site and try to make the viewer believe that their information is reliable.  Students need to know what information to look for on a web site to help them decide if it is a factual web site with reliable information or an 'opinion' web site that is slanted to the web master's point of view.

Implications for future: This is one of the skills that I intend to teach my students both in middle school and in high school, regardless of the subject area they are researching.  I want the students to be able to take the questions and look at a web site to evaluate it for reliability. This could be one of the most important skills the students use when doing research in any subject area on the Internet.

Reviewers Comments: Awesome job, Sheryl.  I loved the table set-up. Wish I'd have looked at yours first. Great info!
