Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

Today's Technology Application teacher must strive to stay abreast of the ever changing technology in our world.  We must be aware of how these technologies impact our world.  Although the basics remain the same, they are still constantly undergoing changes and refinements, and newer technologies and their applications are becoming more available and in demand in the work places of our world.  Students must be aware of and be able to use the terms, concepts, and data input strategies when they graduate and enter the work force or continue their education. As the van guard for preparing our students to work in this technology enriched world we must constantly strive to keep abreast of these changes. We must constantly work to incorporate the new technologies and software into our curriculum that the 'real' world is using in order to prepare our students.  We must also set an example for our students in the proper etiquette and correct ethical practices in the use of the technologies and software.

Through exposure to new software programs and technologies that emerge in the future that will impact my students, I hope to be able to share with them what I learn.  I plan on attending workshops presented by our Service Center and trial software that is available from the Internet.  I also hope to continue to stay in contact with members of the TATC classes and be able to share ideas and information with them to help keep 'on top' of things.

Artifact #9

Descriptors: Foundations, Web Authoring, Impact, Group Work, Internet Research, Web Page, Web Authoring Software

Title: Discussion 2: Impact Reports

Course: 100 Foundations: Module 2-Impact of the Technology Applications on Society

Date Created: August 13, 2002

Source: Group Project in Foundations Module in web page format

Media: Adobe Go Live web authoring software, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat 5.0

Description: The learners of Foundations 100-1 were divided into groups of four to analyze the impact on society through research, interviews, and personal observations of one of the TA subjects.  Our group choose Web Authoring and my task was to research and report on the impact of Web Authoring at the present time. The reports main goal was to be a resource for others interested in our TA subject.

The company members responsibilities were:
bulletOne person was to volunteer to be the company leader
bulletThe company leader was responsible for compiling the report with input from the company members and posting the final report.
bulletEach company member should have three or more resources attributed to them.

The company report submitted should have:
bulletA brief introduction as to the TA subject
bulletA brief history of the impact of the specified TA
bulletResources listed with a brief summary of each resource site
bulletTwo or more resources should be referenced to each company member with the exception of the group leader.

During the course of our group project we demonstrated the use of digital keyboarding standards for data input, modeled the ethical acquisition use of digital information by citing our sources and made informed decisions about current technologies and their applications as to Web Authoring when choosing the information and sites to include in the report.

Rationale
: This was the first group project that we worked on.  I wanted to include this artifact because I believe it shows how a group can collaborate on-line together to complete a task, make the project more informative because of the division of tasks, teach the student the value of organization, scheduling, and cooperation.  It also demonstrates the properties of Standard I.

Implications for future: This type of group collaboration to create a finished product can be used in the classroom to enable students to create a better quality of resources and reports than perhaps the individual could do in a shorter amount of time.  It will also provide the students the opportunity to incorporate Standard I principles as well as the other indicated TEKS.

Reviewers Comments: Congratulations to you and your group.  You did a great job at researching the impact of technology.  Your portion, the impact on today, was concise, easy to read, and informative.
