| June 9 2004 | I think this class is going to be very beneficial to me. I'm a little concerned over making it through this month, but after that, I think I'll be fine. Many of my questions were answered in Discussion 4 and that helps. I am looking forward to working with teachers on creating units and being able to collaborate with other professionals who have some of the same passions I have.
I think I am producing a new knowledge of my ability to be stretched. I had a very good friend ask me yesterday if I enjoyed my life being so busy. I had to stop and ask myself if I do. I think I do, if I can see the end in sight and know there is a break in the hectic schedule. I am making connections about the coaching and mentoring and relating it to what I already do as a math facilitator and as a technology trainer. I haven't had any training in coaching or mentoring, but from what I've read, I already apply many of strategies. That realization is encouraging and affirming. |

| June 16 2004 | This has been a tough week and I'm up very late getting the last assignments done. I thought I was pacing everything well because I was completing assignments and working daily. However, I didn't fully examine all the assignments and did not realize how much work the comparison assignment was going to be. I think when I post this journal, I have completed everything. Whew. I have been attending a 4 day workshop and trying to keep up with the class, and on top of that, a family in our church had a tragic death of their 2 year old daughter and the funeral was today. I went to the funeral during our lunch break. It has been a very draining week.
I have learned a great deal about assistive technology and autism. I have tried to learn about muscular dystrophy and the assistive technology needed, but have not found any very good articles on it. |

In order to gain, support and maintain trust with a colleague, I can show genuine interest in her, share some of my own shortcomings and feelings, and be willing to help in what ever way I am able. I can be careful that she understands that I will treat her confidence as a precious treasure, not to be taken lightly. I can do my best to be non judgemental and listen carefully. I can be very careful to exhibit and share the knowledge I have about technology in a way that is not condescending. If I make a mistake, I can admit it and make efforts to correct it.
Some of the things I am realizing about myself are that I can be a good listener when I work at it. I can communicate effectively and need to attend closely to those with whom I am attempting to communicate so I can monitor how well I am communicating. Throughout this past year, I have worked closely with a number of teachers including daily being inside their rooms to assist with math instruction. The experience has led me to discover that I am good at building trust. Many of the teachers have often related to me how appreciative they are of my help and my attitude. I'm not sure, yet, what I will be doing next year, but an overwhelming number of the teachers have told me that they really want me back at our school as a math specialist, assistant principal, or even as their principal. It has been an extremely rewarding experience. |

The development of my ability to clearly express my values, personal goals, goals for others and for my school is coming along slowly. I have realized for many years, that I can best know what I think if I am able to verbalize my ideas, values, thoughts, and feelings to someone else. This is still true and probably always will be true. So I need to verbalize often to those who will be honest with me and provide needed feedback and questions. I think I can enhance my sense of precision and craftsmanship by practicing with my peer coaches and with my trusted friends who are teachers. Practice and feedback seems to be the key. Use coaching to learn about coaching. :-)

One way that I have attempted to develop and improve my abilities to coach and develop my own abilities to clearly express myself is to read, "Cognitive Coaching" this week. I was in Arkansas over the holiday weekend. Three mornings I picked peas and as I shelled them, during the day, I read the book. Then I worked up a concept map in Inspiration of the highlights that I wanted to remember. Very good book and an easy read. I want to use the principles in the book in a number of areas in my life. I have applied to be the principal of our school, and if I am the principal, or more likely, the assistant principal, I want to initiate coaching on our campus. Then I have listened to a three CD set that talks about mentoring in the spiritual way. I am very interested in engaging in some mentoring relationships to enhance my personal, spiritual life.
In working on the video this week, I have been very grateful that I started it a while back. Putting the video was not much trouble, but getting it in the correct format has been a challenge. I've learned a great deal. |

This has been a challenging and rewarding experience. The very dear friend, with whom I created this lesson, was a great help. She went above and beyond what she had to do to help me. She is excited about teaching this when school starts and is working on student samples and instructional materials. We have both learned so much these past six weeks. She has learned about integrating technology and I have learned about assistive technology and mentoring/coaching. I will be teaching her more about PowerPoint and NoteStar so she can instruct the students. I plan to use the questioning techniques learned in this class with other students in what ever capacity I have the opportunity to serve the BISD next year. I am expecting to improve those skills even more in the next course.

I am learning that I can be saying one thing sometimes, but thinking something very different. For instance... today when my mentee backed out on me..I was saying, "Its okay. I'll be able to work this out, but I was thinking..."How can you do this to me? What am I going to do? It was very hard. I think being able to do that is sometimes necessary as a coach and mentor, though, because we can not be completely non judgmental and must mask our true feelings about a mentees thoughts or actions. Sometimes we might misunderstand them and think they are going in the wrong direction, but if we don't let them know that and help them think through things, we might come to a more complete understanding of what they are saying and discover they are right, after all. This is certainly a life skill as well. One that I wish I was better at using.

I had a relatively new experience today as I coached the presenter I'm working with. She is supposed to present to the elementary teachers in our district on the Six Traits of Writing. Before today, I knew absolutely nothing about the 6 traits. I had to rely completely on her for the student goals and could only help her find the right words as she explained what she thought she needed to teach. She is very excited about the 6 traits, but equally nervous about technology and working with adults. We were able to come up with some nice goals, and even though I wanted to keep her goals to a minimum, she wanted to add some more, so we did. I think the experience I had today was much more like what I will really experience when I start doing this for the district. If I work with secondary educators, it is extremely likely that I will not know the content well. Today, I had to begin to analyze where technology will fit in the staff development without having a preconceived idea. We are also presenting to adults, which makes is different from what I helped plan last time and more like I will do in my job. I am really enjoying working on this lesson.

In gaining and maintaining trust with a colleague, I must remember to value her as a person, be respectful of her feelings, and keep our discussions and interactions confidential. Even if she is doing something outstanding, I think I should consult her before I share that with other faculty. Many teachers are very shy about being recognized in front of their peers. I work with many teachers who constantly run themselves down and point out their shortcomings. I think it is important to assure them of my role and find things to build their confidence. Point out their good points.
What am I learning about myself? Like I said last week, this lesson plan is a new experience for me because I am facilitating the creation of lesson plans on a topic about which I am unfamiliar. I have had to listen very carefully to my mentee for clues about what needs to be done. I have had to use the strategy of restating what I am hearing and in the process, she has clarified her statements even more. That was fun and yet challenging to do. |

I am really working on my ability to express myself clearly. I try to listen to how I articulate my thinking. I have been asked to be the new teacher mentor and use my coaching skills with them. Then today, I was asked to be the lead teacher over 2nd grade, even though I do not now, nor have I ever taught 2nd grade. Interesting, huh? So after school, today, I used my coaching and leadership skills to help them organize and prepare a lesson plan for tomorrow. I think in the case of a coach, it might be more important that I can help another teacher develop the ability to clearly express her goals and values. It looks like I'm going to get a great deal of practice trying this year. The way I plan to further enhance my sense of precision and craftsmanship is to use them this year in my multifaceted job. :-)

I am very excited about the possibilities for this year. I have learned a great deal in this class about clarifying questions, coaching skills, and working with adults. I have been challenged to take a look at my own values and goals and what I believe should be the goals of our district. I will get plenty of practice throughout this year as I start my new job as Instructional Technology Coordinator in less than two weeks. Yahoo! I will share my new knowledge with those we hire to work with me and practice them with the teachers I have the honor to assist.

We have a new administration team at our school and change always bring some amount of stress. I have been watching teachers and talking to those who's stress level seems to be too high. I'm endeavoring to use my mentoring skills especially with the new teachers. |

In mentoring to get the staff development lesson completed, I strove for precision by restating what I thought the presenter was saying so I would be clear about her goals and objectives. |

The 6 or 7 teachers I have been mentoring the past few weeks are each very different in their personalities and needs. I have tried very hard to offer them the assistance according to each of their individual needs. Some of them need encouragement and some of them just need a listening ear, while others need helpful suggestions. I want to get better at reading people. |

I am basically an optimistic person. I try to expect the best of people and situations. Not knowing, for sure, what I was going to be doing this year, I determined to do the best job I possibly could at which ever job I was given to do. I knew that I could practice my coaching skills whether I was the principal, AP, math facilitator, or Instructional Technology Coordinator. So at the beginning of the year, I just concentrated on mentoring the new teachers. |

When someone at school acts in a manner that surprises or confuses me, I usually am able to think that something is probably bothering them and I will wait and give them some room. Also, our administration wants teachers to create six weeks unit plans, which is causing stress on busy teachers. I tried to understand why it would be a good idea and realized that if we knew the big picture of the six weeks, then the daily lesson plans should be easier to complete. I expressed that idea to teachers who were not excited about the unit plans. |
