Shot Justification

This video project is a fun look at, and a how-to about, making friends for those who have just moved to a new work environment or made other changes in their lives. I just recently changed work locations and am having fun getting to know my new co-workers. I hope you enjoy the video and if it brings a smile to your face, then it brings one to mine.

Music credit

The guitar music in the background of the video is provide by Mary Tune. She composed and played the music. We recorded it in the classroom using Wave Creator 3.

Here is the mp3 file of it and a second piece we recorded, but did not get in the video.

Mary2 and Mary1 Thank you Mary! You play beautifully. What wonderful talent. Thank you for sharing it and your friendship.

Information on camera/editing techniques

All video was taken with a Canon ZR50 Camcorder onto mini DV tape. A tripod was used for most video which enabled a smoother shot. Also, using the tripod and the camera's remote control enabled me to shoot the video of myself all by myself.

Lighting was a challenge since I have no flash or lighting for the camcorder. I just tried to position people and things to make the best of the available light.

Putting a great deal of thought into the storyboard really paid off. I was able to use it to check off scenes as we shot them and plan for the ones we needed.

Two programs were used in the editing of the video. Windows Movie Maker was used to capture the video, trim the clips, create the titles and subtitles, and put the video in order. Then Adobe Premier was used to add the cut away shot and the background music.

The assignment called for four or more edited scenes. The video has four sections (rules) made up of several short scenes to drive the point home.

There is no composite shot in the video, but if I were to go back and add one, I would shoot the video of me explaining each rule so that I could remove the background and add that to the beginning of each rule section. That way, you could see the beginning of the scene and not just have me there in the chair.

Reflections on project:

While making this video was a fun diversion from the norm, that is not to say it was not without its challenges. I was really counting on software to help me make a composite, but was unable to locate software that would do it for me without my having prepared the right kind of video. Therefore, I do not have a composite shot. I just ran out of time.

I captured all the video onto my Tablet PC using Windows Movie Maker. I usually use ARC Soft's Showbiz, but wanted to try something new. Showbiz captures in avi, but the default for Movie Maker is wmv. I was almost finished putting all the clips together and trimming them when I decided I wanted more features than Movie Maker was giving me. Then I tried to bring the video into Showbiz, but it would not read it. I drove to Granbury to use my brother's Adobe Premier and imported it into Adobe. Then I decided to finish the movie in Movie Maker and bring the finished product into Adobe. Adobe Premier is what I used to cut away from the talking head and add the continuous music in the background.

The next challenge was file size. The video is a little longer than required and I really didn't want to leave any scenes out. I went back and trimmed as many scenes as I could and cut a minute off the whole video.

When we were ready to render the movie, I left Granbury and my brother put it on the server, so I could FTP it to my computer when I got home. That saved me about 30 minutes.

Making this video was fun and gave me even more time with my friends!
