Desktop Publishing

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection

Prior to beginning this unit, I thought desktop publishing was just a fancy word for making brochures, fliers, business cards, etc.  Having done these types of projects for many years, the unit was going to be a proverbial piece of cake!  Immediately upon getting into the elements of design showed me how very wrong I was.  Going back and analyzing many of my prior projects made me realize just how much work was still required on them all!  The principles learned will benefit me not only with basic DTP projects but also in daily word processing projects and even to future web designs.

Course: Desktop Publishing 104

Date Created: January 20, 2003

Source: Individual Project

Media: Publisher

Description: This project was to create at least a one-page newsletter that would incorporate information presented through the Interactive Guides.  We were to create both a sample newsletter and a template to work from.  We were to import, resize, and format the text with columns, pull quotes, graphics, typefaces and other desktop publishing elements to make an attractive, easy to read, document.

Rationale:  The project was designed to pull together everything that has been covered to date.  The use of text, graphics, white space, repetition, etc. was carefully studied.

Implications for future: Future publications that I am in charge of will be handled in a much more professional manner.  My second job outside of school requires many fliers, newsletters, brochures, etc.  This course will be utilized a lot for those projects.  And, hopefully, those items will be better because of it!

Reviewers Comments: Great layout! I like the way your retitled some of your sections like 10 elements in details instead of 10 elements continued.
