Observation Experience

In order to do an observation, I had to go outside the school setting.  Our multimedia/web page instructor at school is currently in TATC, too, and is, therefore, not yet qualified for observations.  Since I do not teach any classes, she is in the same predicament as me.  Plus, being a small school district in a rural setting did not offer a chance to go to another school.

I asked our local weekly paper if I could come observe their operations.  They publish both the Clyde paper, which is where I work, and the Baird paper, which is where I live.  I worked with Danny Tabor at the Clyde Journal while he was compiling the week's news for both of our weekly newspapers. He demonstrated (and actually did) the typesetting for the headlines, positioned written articles, floated the weekly advertisements and inserted new graphics and ads. Pictures from two of the Clyde campuses had been received and had to be scanned in and put into newspaper acceptable formats. All ads and pictures are black and white only. Pictures received from the local funeral home would not open due to an incompatible file format and the secretary at the funeral home (Bailey Funeral Home) was not able to correct so I went over and showed her how to rename and format into a user-friendly file. (She was using the format that came with the scanner which was very obtuse!) The paper was not actually printed until Tuesday afternoon and I had planned to return to observe that part but was unable to due to time constraints at school. Mr. Tabor has told me that during summer break should I wish to observe and have some real "hands-on" practice that I would be more than welcome!
