Communicate Information

Communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

Reflection

The ability to communicate information in a variety of formats and for diverse audiences is of growing importance when sending information electronically, especially via email and the internet. There are so many varieties and levels of computers these days, that it is vitally important to convey information in formats that are universal and easily read by all, whether it be a text file, image file, or html file. I learned much about various types of file formats and which ones are best suited for all audiences based on file type and file size. I have learned to be much more mindful of the fact that not everyone has a computer just like mine with the same programs I have. I have learned to use small file sizes, as needed, and "universal" file types that are understood by most all computers. In the future, I hope to be able to teach my students the importance of this because it will inevitably make them much more proficient in their work. It will also make them more accessible to other online users and learners.

Description: In this assignment, we were to present a graphic in a universal format that represented us....much like a business card or logo of our lives. We could create a new graphic or use one from a previous class. I chose to use a graphic from a previous assignment that demonstrated me as a person (normally) and then me as a TATC online learner. It was designed to be comical as well as true to my heart. Our logo or was to be strong in graphic nature, and I took a variety of images in various formats and combined them into one universal graphic file type, a jpg. We were to submit this assignment in a universal format that all could read, and so I felt the jpg was a good universal format which could be viewed with relatively little download time.

Rationale: I chose to include this assignment because I felt that it was a great example of choosing a universal file type for diverse audiences. We were not limited in any way on how we could present our graphics, and each student chose his/her own way and format in which to submit their graphic to the group. It was up to us to choose which format to use, as long as it could be seen and read by all. I hope to become better at creating and more aware of universal file types in the future, so that I may reach more people in my personal and professional life.

Implications for future: In the future, I plan to spend a great deal of time working with my students to show them the implications of not working with universal programs. I want to address cross-platform issues, file size issues, and basically all the compatibility issues that we have worked with in these courses. We have learned with files are considered to be universal in working with text documents, image files, etc. and I want my students to have that same knowledge. I did not realize that there were so many options in choosing file types depending on your particular audience, and now I have the knowledge to reach any audience anytime!
