Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Reflection

One of the main aspects of technology is to identify tasks at hand, search for solutions, and then apply the knowledge that we have found to analyze and evaluate the information. This is true for basically any aspect of technology that we study today, including sound, digital graphics, web authoring, multimedia, etc. My goal is to be able to always carefully review information that I have searched for and be able to draw my own successful conclusions on what is reliable information and what is not reliable information. I hope to be able to show my students how to have confidence in their own learning online, and how to make intelligent decisions based on their own tasks identified, searching for information, and then analyzing it for validity and worthiness.

Artifact #8 (Software Review)

Artifact #8a (Edited wav file)

Descriptors: Sound, edit, software, review of sound editing software

Title: Sound Editing Software Review

Course: 103 Multimedia

Date Created: March 6, 2003

Source: Individual Project using Sound Editing Software Demos

Media: Internet, 3 wav clips from www.dailywav.com, Sonic Foundry's Super Duper Music Looper, MS Word

Description: To review and summarize a particular sound editing software that we may use in our multimedia class and edit sound files for input into our Movie Integration project using that software. We were to sign up for a sound editing software that we were to review and give our findings to our classmates. The highlights of what we were to discuss are below:

1. Name of the software

2. Approximate price

3. Location or web site to see the software

4. Brief review on that software

5. Ease of use

6. Feasibility

7. Features of the software

8. Editing capabilities

9. File inputs available

10. File outputs available

11. Give my opinion on the software. What did I like or dislike?

We were also to demonstrate that we could use a sound editing software to manipulate sound files. The basic requirements are below:

  • We were going to edit two sound files together into one sound file. We could use the readings provided as references for editing tips in a variety of sound editing software programs.
  • We needed two sound files for this activity.
  • We needed the theme to a movie or a TV show.
  • We needed an additional sound either from that show or a self-created sound.
  • We were to edit those sounds in a way that we might incorporate them into one sound file for our Movie Integration project.
  • We could add any effect you like or simply combine the two sounds.

Rationale: I felt that this project was appropriate for this standard because it required me to gather information about the software that we were reviewing, and actually analyze the info in order to present an informed opinion of the software to our classmates. Each of us had to identify the software that we were to review, answer all the criteria required, search for other reviews of the software, and then use the software so that we could make a well-informed review of the software for our classmates. We then were to take the software or another sound editing software, and actually use the principals that we had learned to edit and create our own sound clip.

Implications for future: I thought that this was a great learning experience! I had never worked with sound editing software before, and I had a blast! It was so interesting to see all the various effects that I could apply to a sound file and make it truly "my own" in a creative sense. I intend to let my students try as many of these sound editing software demos, and let them just use the sky as the limit on what they can do with their own sound files. I can not wait to be able to see the delight in their faces when they achieve the goal of creating and editing their own sound files!

Reviewers Comments: My 5 year old son loves playing with the Super Dooper Music Looper Demo, your daughter will enjoy it! I thought the price was great for a beginners program. What did you think about Acid 3.0? I also used it to mix my sounds, and as for as the demo goes it seems fairly easy. Your sound file is well done, made me want to watch the movie again.
