SBEC Standard #8

Digital Graphics and Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

This is my greatest weakness. My art and graphic skills are very suspect. This will be a true test of my ability to learn and adapt. I believe that today technology is comprised of creativity, art, and computer skills. These skills encompass the primary search for impact and appropriateness in how design leads to communications.

The concepts of digital graphics and animation are currently the foundation for all the technology in the new world of business and marketing and every student must develop at least a basic understanding to be successful. But, it's not just the ever-changing tools of hardware and software platforms that will be the focus, but we must emphasizes the fundamentals of art and design. The conceptual foundation of art and design is the repetitive foundation of all technology.

My insights into artistic techniques are very weak, but they are improving through this course. On the other hand, my strengths of understanding how to communicate across electronic mediums and my basic understanding of computer technology, business software, and the Internet have made the skills development for Digital graphics and animation much easier. I have only had to develop my concepts of art and not the additional skills to the technology.

Because my vision is on providing hands-on professional developments to teachers, MISD and our teachers will guide students to integrate project ideas across the curriculum.

I know I will leave the TATC course with a polished portfolio that demonstrates my success in developing a greater understanding of digital graphics and animation

Descriptors: Applying the Elements and Principles of Design as a Communication Tool

Title: Representing Design

Course: TATC Foundations 100-1 A Module 4

Date Created: August 24, 2002

Source: Internet Research

Media: Illustrator 10 Document to saved as a Acrobat 5.5 PDF.

Description: I was assigned to create an image that represents each the elements and principals of design. I composed a series of images in Illustrator using the 3.5 diskette as my subject. I tried to create a simple poster that would allow it to be used as a single handout in class. I identified the Principles and Elements for each image. I used Illustrator and digital photos of 3.5 disks for each image. I had Illustrator changes images to drawings and added lines, color, and texture.

Rationale: When we create a web page, we make an effort to communicate easily and quickly with others (TA TEKS 8.12s Research digital graphics as an art form and the impact of digital graphics on society). The balance of color, texture, text, and visual images makes all of us think about the best forms of communication. Regardless of learning styles and education the principals of design improve the opportunity to communicate effectively.

The most important issue for me was the copy right focus in the TA TEKS 8.3k. Pertinent laws and issues regarding the use of technology in society were reintroduced to me. It requires that projects give credit and get permission for resources and reviewing the Fair Use Laws for publishing.

Implications for future: I am just beginning to learn more about the principals and elements of design. I will continue to grow and learn about the beauty and practicality of the use of design elements and principals. My view of web pages and even art work has changed and continue to changes as I see more and more good example of these tools for communications.

Reviewer's Comments: A fantastic poster and demonstrates well the elements and principles of design. Great way to relate technology with design with your chosen imagery. I would like to add some dimension to a few of your definitions. The element of Value is a range of from light to dark. Your example is correct but the range is limited. Filling the solid color area with a gradient fill from light to dark would produce a more powerful example. The example you give for space is correct but there are stronger examples and easier for lay people to understand that you already have illustrated. The Space of the background ... white paper, negative space, to the space of the objects of the foreground ... disk images, positive space is considered a shallow background. The overlapping of the disk images is an example of space. It gives the illusion of 3-D space on a 2-D surface. If you had taken the disks placed behind the other disks in this overlap and made them smaller(size..proportion) and moved them up the paper (position) it would create an even deeper illusion of 3-D space.
