SBEC Standard #10

Video Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

"…The desire to teach and the ability to teach well are not the same thing. With the rarest of exceptions, one has to learn how to become a good teacher and technology is the key"

- Herbert Kohl, educator & writer

Video and online content can help students make meaningful connections to new information, reinforce previous learning, interact with other learners, and allow teachers to create original content.

I really enjoyed these projects. I learned a lot about editing video and sound. I have tried to share tools and ideas for creating movies, storyboards, and editing. The Multiquence and MovieMaker II software made these projects easy to dub and the software is excellent.

I was often stressed about time and my energy level was really low trying to maintain the high quality of the TATC projects during the Video Courses. The input and discussions during the eight weeks for the Video 105 and 205 courses were very meaningful to me in re-designing my concepts of technology and the classroom.

Title: The Hunting Song, by Tom Lehrer. From the Album: That was the Year that Was, 1963. The Video has written permission from the Tom Lehrer. Foundation for Education Excellences.

Course: TATC Module 105 Video

Date Created: April 15, 2003

Source: LiveMotion, GoLive, Multiquence, CoolEdit, PhotoEditor. Imported into the computer with Movie Maker and Dazzle 80 tools

Media: Still Digital Images, Digital Video on Hi 8 video tape.

Description: This was a two phase project. The production phase included rehearsing for the filming, shooting the video, recording the audio and digitizing all of this for the post-production phase. I had to analyze each concept in the video and take into account the basic six concepts of who, what, when, where, and how to shoot my Hunting Song video. I spent over twelve hours cutting and reshaping this video to show how to best communicate my video message.

The Hunting Song Video featured Tom Lehrer's song of the same name from 1963. The video had twenty still shots incorporated in as a "shocking" cut video. I tried telling a story of the day in the life of a hunter, two game wardens, and a cow. The 1:59 second video was fun and the sound track even more so. The purpose of the video was to re-create the fun of Tom Lehrer's music and introduce to a new generation.

Rationale: The assignment required time management, research, and basic editing skills for audio and video clips . I loved the ease-of-use of the Adobe products and I wanted to create a great animations using LiveMotion for my required web site. I spent many hours experimenting and testing editing tools, video techniques and software properties, and other components to work seamlessly in a video with a size limitations 1 MB for 56k users through video streaming. I am very proud of this production, but I am still researching how to integrate these concepts into classroom setting for teachers and student use.

Implications for future: These concepts are important for all Texas teachers and students. All students could be introduced to these methods in any school with the aid of the free software like IMovie or MovieMaker included in almost every computer today. This course does require an above average computers with a lot of hard drive space and at least 512MB of memory. It also requires a lot of patient and a very creative teacher. Better tutorials and reference materials must be created for teachers, administrators, and students.

Those students who have a further interests in video technology, could learn more about Television and Radio in Career Technology courses. They may also learn other technologies by participating in any of the other TA TEKS courses required by the State of Texas.

Reviewers Comments: "The video is very cute and does a great job of telling a very funny story."

Title: The News. This was a video production done with the 3rd and 4th grade students at Tarver Rendon Elementary School, in Mansfield ISD

Course: TATC Module 205 Video

Date Created: May 20, 2003

Source: LiveMotion, GoLive, Multiquence. Imported into the computer with Movie Maker II and Dazzle 120 tools

Media: Sony Digital Video on Hi 8 video tape.

Description: The production phase includes rehearsing for the filming, shooting your video, recording your audio and digitizing all of this for the new cable network. I had to analyze the "live tape" and take into account the basic concepts of news, weather, lunch. How do you produce a Video of the News for K-4 students? I spent over six hours cutting and reshape this video to show how to best communicate campus-wide video message. I think it worked

The 2:39 video was fun and the video effects and transition in MoveMaker II even made it better. The purpose of the video was to demonstrate the power of the editing and the video in the classroom. This project is now an everyday program for announcements for the school and the video, after editing, the video will be posted to the web each day.

Rationale: The assignment required time management, research, and basic editing skills for audio and video clips . I loved the video and I wanted an easier way to create animations in video. I spent many hours experimenting and testing editing tools, video techniques and software properties, and other components to work seamlessly in a video with a size limitations 1 MB for the WMV video streaming.

Implications for future: Those students who participate in the News video are integrating the main tools for technology. This could lead to more use of Educational Television at Tarver Rendon and new respect for the technology objectives of the State. The message from the students to the community is the next step in this project.

Reviewer's Comments: "Great explanation of the project on your web page! I'll bet the students love this, although they probably have no idea of the amount of work involved for you and the teachers."
